You took the words right out of my mouth snrusnak! I second that vote on the 545/65RFE is a decent tranny for those of us who aren't too critical of needing close gear ratios or pedal to da metal, day in, day out. Mine does the job I need it too, flawlessly.

We have the 8 speed behind a Hemi in our 2014 Grand Cherokee and it is a great tranny so far. From what I read it's not being produced by Chrysler, I forget who makes them. The Jeep has 3:09 gears in the rear but you would never guess that they were that high, it has tons of power down low! this thing kills my truck in a race and doesn't have a flat spot anywhere in the rpm's, it pulls hard all the way to 120!

If I were you I would wait for the 8 speed!

The Hemi 8 Speeds have been out since May 2013

...couple members here decided to pit a 6/speed with 3.55 against the 8 speed with 3.21 gears at the track and they were almost dead even.

http://www.ramforumz.com/showthread.php?t=143891

...an 8 speed with 3.92's would kick ass!

Great to get out for a change and meet some fellow gear heads lol.

I was honestly surprised at the outcome of the couple passes we made. I figured the 3:55/6spd would just pull away from me and leave me far behind. Couldn't have been more evenly matched IMHO.

Why dodge/ram has under rated the tow ability of the 3:21 geared 8spds ill never understand considering they pull just about dead nuts even to 1000' mark then the 3:55 inches forward, but only slightly.

It was AWESOME of Keith to help me out with this comparison of the two drive trains.
Anyone on the fence about buying a 8 spd and 3:21's will now know without a doubt what kind of performance they are buying
And how it stacks up against a 6 spd 3:55 geared truck. Both trucks were quad cab 4x4 2013 models, it just couldn't be any better for comparison IMO

The first run Keith tree'd me BAD LOL, my first run in 2 seasons..... That's my story and I'm sticking to it LOL

Run 1- sorry I don't have a scanner

I test drove a 5.7 with the 8spd three weeks (or so) ago. It is available.

iirc, 15city, 20hwy, 17combined. but I chose the v6 w/ the 8spd.

edit: the 8spd trans is manufactured in Germany, no clue who by tho.

Wow I don't even now what to say about this. You do know the "845RFE" you speak of is a license produced ZF 8HP70 transmission right? They are the exact same design. I doubt Chrysler will goon up the execution so much as to turn it into the "sack of $hit" you speak of.

Anyway I bought my Hemi 8 speed on 5-28-2013 so they've been out for a while. From what I understand, Chrysler was not able to gear up the Kokomo plant quite quick enough so the first (not sure how many) 8 speed trannies are actually ZF 8HP70s made in Germany by ZF. This is the case with my truck which was built in February 2013.

Thanks for posting that BlackRamHemi, its good to know what a difference the 8 speed makes effectively and not just on paper.
