The myth busters show pretty much proved that it actually hurt mileage, although not very much. Same thing with the tail gate off or down, that hurts mileage. Those mesh gates and what not hurt the mileage even worse.

What cover did MythBusters use on their test?

Take most anything Mythbusters do with a grain of salt. Most test are just seat of the pants and not scientifically controlled so results can be very misleading.

There have been a few studies on this and the results seem to show a positive result. Even Ram engineers have said a cover reduces drag, reduced drag equals increase in mpg. My take would be a very light cover may give you a very small increase in mileage, but a heavier cover would subtract from any gain in efficeincy.

Wish it would make a couple more miles increase, but it seems if any increase is there it is very small with the right cover.

The positive with a cover is that people can't throw any garbage in the bed of your truck. That will keep the load a little lighter and increase mileage.

I have seen the Mythbusters episode and I have talked to Adam about that episode that I improved my MPG after installation of my Leer 700. His response was (paraphrasing) there could be a difference from a Ford (what they used in the myth) and a new Ram.

many on this forum have put on the bak flip covers. i don't recall any one posting about mpg gains. if covers really improved mpg, they would come from the factory with the covers as standard equipment.

My bakflip doesn't weigh much so I don't think the weight of it really hurt the mpg's but it sure didn't help either. When I bought it I was hoping for a little gain but there was no change at all! Your right foot is the best tool to help mpg's.

What a good response Ramzaq that paper was quite the good little tib bit of information! My cover according to the packing of FedEx was only 32 lbs so my guess is that 32 lbs isn't going to make that big of a difference in weight. I would be pretty disappointed if I got less gas mileage due to that little weight.

No increase on mine. In fact I drove the same 200 mile trek to brother in laws with & without & without actually did slightly better. Of course wind conditions are never the same.
