Default In need of some helpful advice, lift and tire...

New to the forumz and new to owning a dodge. I have an 01 15004x4 and was toying around with the idea of installing a 3" leveling kit and a 3" body lift and wanted to fit 37x12.50 military tires on it. Anybody know how this setup will fair? Or for that matter if it is even plausable? I've spent some time perusing the forumz and the interwebs and have yet to run across anything helpful... Any advice is appreciated and any other setup ideas are greatly encouraged.

I am not terribly familiar with the 2nd gen rams and lifting. But i'll give you what advice i can.

look up sites like rough country, bds, pro-comp. and see what they offer for your exact truck. Make sure you specificy whether it's 4wd or 2wd. It'd probably be better for you to just man up and get a suspension lift. By the time you install/pay to have a level and body lift installed, you will have wish you went with a suspension lift.

Then once you find a lift, they normally specify the normal tire ran with them. like 35" or 37" inch. You should be able to fit a good sized tire with a 5-6" lift on your truck. Calling local lift shops/google is your best friend to do preliminary research.

And what do you mean by "military tires" exactly??

I've thought about the idea of just growing a pair for the suspension lift but I have the leveling kit and have priced for a body lift at around 350 I'm on sort of a budget right now... And by military tires im referring to 37x12.50x16.5 Goodyear mtz surplus humvee tires i can pick up a full set with a spare for 350 at about 90% tread. I'm tight on money right now coming out of a terrible storm here and just trying to get some height on my truck for cheap

well if you already have the leveling kit then I say go for it. No reason why That set up shouldn't work. Might be tight getting 37s on there tho. But I bet you could get them to work.

At 3" you'll need new drop pitman arm, adjustable track bar, and longer control arms.

Body lift has no effect on this.

Running 37" tires on the stock running gear equates to a timebomb in general with these heavy trucks. Driving style will be directly proportional to the life of the drivetrain. If still running the stock gear ratio, then everything performance-wise will (assuming there is still some there now) fall off the cliff. A regear to 4.88 or changing to 3/4 or 1 ton axles. You cold get away with 4.56 but would need some engine mods to help. Oh and then the tranny may start crying if it hasn't already. Just typical for these trucks.

Not all trannies turn to mush. Just like everything preventive and active maintenance is necessary on these 2nd Gens.

Lastly, with the military tires I'm assuming you are referring to the Hummer type Goodyear tires and 16.5 double beadlocks. If you are intending on the beadlock wheels, then you'll have to run 8 lug. as you currently have 5 lug. Or did you already mod that? Example combo with 5 lug.

The tire size further requires the need for the suspension/steering changes mentioned earlier or you'll be putting the tire into the wheel well at your feet. You'd also need a minimum of 4.5" backspacing on the wheels to clear the control arms.

Height-wise with the the SL and BL you can clear the 37s.

Sorry if this bursts a bubble, but it takes a bit for change in tire size. Many of us here can help you out as you consider things further.

^^^^ This... you're really outrunning your running gear trying to run these tires on a 1500 without serious mods. 1500 stuff is marginal with 35 inch tires.
You should check in with Danny at DodgeOffRoad. He builds some of the best gear for upgrading 2nd gen suspension and steering but the products have a price tag.
That said, stepping up to a 37 inch military tire and cheap cannot be used in the same sentence unless the truck is prety much display only.

Well dang... Even if I were to re gear it to 4.88 and swap the axles from a 3/4 ton or 1 ton?

No...we were discussing your 1500 running gear. You'll need lots of beef for those 37's and not just the axles, er differentials to start. You may discover that as you go along, or spend the big bucks from the start and do it right so you don't have to do it over.

I would look for 2002 2500 or 3500 diffs. 35 spline front axles and no front cad unit. Earlier units have weaker 31 spline front axles (same as your 1500). Then a H.D track bar. Steering would be '06.5 hd or some kind of heim joint setup. Then a steering brace to limp your stock box along.

I reread your original post and noticed you want to install a "3 inch leveling kit" This will relocate your axle back towards your cab and unncenter it under the frame about an inch, further reducing clearance. I would recommend a proper 3 inch lift with longer arms, or a 5 inch lift with your BL.
