Default Upper rear fender wells and rust?

I have noticed quite a few trucks of various ages with rust or rust bubbling on the top of the rear fender wells and was wondering why it seems Dodge is more prone to this than either Ford or Dodge? [My observation anyways]

Talking this past weekend to my bud who is a mechanic who knows a body man, he told me it is because Dodge uses some type of foam in that area and therefore it collects water, salt, sand etc and that is the main reason why you see so many Dodge trucks with rust there.

Just curious is this is indeed true and if so, is it still in use on the new trucks?

I get my vehicles undercoated at least once every two yrs with Rust Check so hopefully I don't get the issue, but I am not sure if the product actually reaches or the applicator can access the areas I am talking about?

I have my vehicles undercoated yearly at Rust Check and so far so good....I haven't had any issues at all with any vehicle that I have owned....I really don't know why...I have seen the same thing....

My buddy owns rust check and I can tell you that it does reach the spots....They should remove your rear lights on your truck at which time they stick a long wand down the entire box area.......When I get my vehicles done they ususally drip for up to three months.....Not saying more is better but I have never had any body issues,......

I use to do my own, just bought a 4 ltr jug, used a compressor and a special tank and I was done, but for the last 4-5 yrs I have been taking it to a guy on Bloor street here in Oshawa and I clearly couldn't do a better job myself!

I swear each vehicle Chris does, he thinks it's is own.

I will be sure to ask him next time, or may even call/visit him to see what he has to say about this inner fender foam thing?

it wasnt foam, it was the type of metal they used on the inner fenders from 2002-2008. There were gaps in welds in the bedsides as well that allowed salt water in but not out.

Down south we see no rust, so its definately restricted to the salt belt.

So they changed the metal and fixed the welding gaps after 2008 I assume?

I haven't had a real good look at mine yet, but with the plastic inner fender wells, I am not sure I will be able to see much anyways?

On my last 2 Sierra's, there were little slots around the circumference of the inner wheel well, I sprayed up in there every time when I washed my truck, especially in the winter time and was surprised how much crap (Sand/dirt and likely salt) that I could get out of there!

Its fixed for 2009+ ramns, I have yet to see one with rust unless it was on the chrome.

A good way to check is to yank your tailight housings real quick and shine a flashlight down inside the bed sides. You will be able to see what I am talking about, the seam where the outer fender meets the inner fender is where the problem was on the 3rd gens, and it should not be an issue (or as much of one) on the 4th gen.

Keep in mind that even with proper maintenance and prevention no vehicle will last forever in the salt belt. You guys up north basically drive through the ocean for half the year. When I lived in Watertown NY with my 09, every year I would remove the grille, headlights, tailights, side steps, wheel spats and wheel liners in the spring once I was sure the snow was gone and rinse the SHAT out of everything. Then I let it dry and undercoated the shat out of everything with permatex undercoat (from walmart). worked like a charm! If I ever end up living in the salt belt again I am just going to take the truck to lineX and have the underside and 3" up the rockers coated so I don't have to deal with it anymore.

Never heard of it referred that way before, but it is true.

If one can see down the inner fenders with a flashlight then I have no doubts my Rust Check guy coated the area good.
