Default towing 35' travel Trailer 7500lbs gvwr

Looking at buying a Keystone passport 3220BH. this is 35' overall and a dry weight of 6,040lbs. GVWR is 7500lbs. Tongue weight is 600lbs dry. Now if I go to the Dodge Towing website, It says I can only tow 5,050lbs. That seems kinda low. I have the hemi, factory towing package, 3.93 gears. quad cab 4wd.

I would be using an Equal-i-zer weight/sway hitch. it is long for a short bed truck.

The RV dealer tells me that this isn't a problem, but I'm not so sure I believe him. The wife isn't real comfortable after reading post after post of this is an ultra-lite travel trailer, but should have a 3/4 ton pulling it.

Opinions?

I know my towing rating on my 2013 is 10,000 with the 3.92 rear end I tow a 22 foot travel trailer that is 4,000 dry weight, 6000 fully loaded. I think that tow rating seems really low but also I would never trust what an RV dealer tells you, they will tell you anything to make a sale. The dealer here tried to tell me my old silverado with the 4.8l engine, no oil cooler, no trans cooler could tow a 9,000 pound dry weight trailer, I laughed at him and went to another dealer.

I have a 05 1500 quad cab with the 5.7 in it. I tow a 33ft Jayco TT with a dry weight of 5900 and when its loaded down for weekend trips it weights about 6200-6500lbs. I don't really have a problems towing it. I put my 07 ZX14r in the bed of my truck which wet weight is 570lbs while I was towing the TT. I have the leveling bars and friction anti sway on it the trailer and it helps a lot. I messed around with TT when we first got it to see how much of a difference it made without them and I could tell HUDGE difference compared to with them as far as the strain on my truck went. My last tow with the TT and bike I drove from western nc to south eastern KY and had no issues. very little change in engine temp( went up a little on bigger inclines but cooled back down to normal very quickly) . On the route I take to there I go across sky ridge which has a lot of up and downs and I also go across black mountain in NC which is a pretty good incline. Most of the tractor trailers can only get up to about 35mph if that with a load but I have no problem with staying at 55mph with tow/haul on. I average about 3500-4000rpms doing that. Your truck will tow it but I recommend over time that if you don't already have it get a tranny cooler and oil cooler so it doesn't put as much heat back into your motor or tranny. If your not comfortable with it I wouldn't do it. I don't know what your towing experience is or anything and my experience is kinda limited because I used to set in mobile homes and we had our own dedicated trucks for that and as far as towing with my truck the TT is the biggest and heaviest Ive towed with it

Hope it helps up you out man

well, I ended up getting a Passport 2920bh GT. Weighs 5,480lbs empty and gvw of 7,500lbs. I can't see where I would ever get to that. We just don't need that much crap.

Seems to pull it very nicely. spent the money for an equal-i-zer hitch setup. makes a huge difference than the older style friction sway and load distribution hitch I had with my old TT.

The towing rating for your Ram seems low to me. My 2012 with 3:55 gears is rated at 8400 LBS and if I was able to get the 3:92 gearing when I purchased, the capacity would have jumped to 10K.

That rating is baffling. My 06 QQ 1500 4x4 with 3.92 Hemi is 8350lb towing capacity. 5250 makes no sense. I have a 29ft travel trailer with a 14ft slide out that is 6300 empty. Figure another 600lbs for water and propane and I am at nearly 7000lbs without my camping gear and stuff. My truck hauls it just fine, not going to win any races and I may be able to pass a gas station but it hauls it fine.

If your new to hauling big trailers, here is a great video on the best way to setup a weight distribution hitch. I have had 7+ trailers and have used WDH on all of them but never set them up(as tight as this guys shows) like this video and I have to say, they work better if you get them this tight.

You might check your door sticker which will indicate the tow capacity for your truck. This is the definitive answer as it is based on your specific truck as it was built.

The specifications that I found on my truck (2002 with 4.7) says 8200 maximum trailer weight so surely your hemi would be capable of more or at least the same.
