I wouldn't say one "really thick" coat. Because I have put it on too thick at some places and it bubbled up. But I spray enough for good coverage, much like you'd do with a paint rattle can. The difference is like you said, I can erase it and start all over.

First of all youre all wrong in how youre spraying dip. First 2 coats should be light dusting to create a base for you later coats to bind to. 3-6 coats should be sprayed on "wet". Heavy enough to not look textured but not so heavy that it runs. Let it dry 10-15 minutes between coats. Doing 1 coat will ensure that you have a really hard time if you ever try to peel it off. 6+ coats means easy peeling later on along with a very durable coating.

that is exactly how I did my grill. It came out really nice.
