Default Dealer & Hitch issue

Can you all clear something up for me? I called the dealer and asked if they could install a class 4 hitch and brake controller. I said I wanted the hitch that bolted to the frame and is u shaped (my description). He said it was 130 dollars for the Mopar product that is oem. He also said the 2012 1500 rams already had a frame piece installed and that the mopar one was a class 4 hitch. I believe it is only class 4 if it has weight distribution parts right? I don't have those. Also he said the brake controller was $238.00 and had to be programmed in to the ecu? Does all this sound right or do I need to go to some other place?

As for the hitch? Yes you are correct. And its only class 4 with wt dist...
And its the only one they offer,so they say, I know this because I bought it and it didn't line up properly. They bolt was cutting into the plastic on the bumper since the two holes didn't line up properly just like the curt peice I had just returned and they said it was "just fine, and not to use all that aftermarket junk". I told them bs and they offered to try and make it fit better but after that attitude, and a couple past experiences, I told them to forget it and I got a harness and ball for my Silverado since I don't tow nothing heavy.


As for the controller I don't know. I'm sure someone else can chime in.

Also, talk them down a bit on it. I got me for 108 plus tax. Lol.

as to the OEM brake controller
what i like about what i have seen, it does NOT stick out like some of the after market ones, so you don't bang your knee
it does need to be programmed into the Rams computer
if you buy it through your dealership, they Might program it in at a discount

as for the Class 4 Hitch Receiver, check out the ETRAILER website

I ended up putting a class V on mine for my TT. As far as the brake controller I don't understand why everyone says it has to be programed to your ECU I just installed mine plug and play. It works fine with no programing.

You don't HAVE to have the brake controller programmed, but doing so will allow you to see the controller settings in the EVIC screen. I've been towing for the last year without it being programmed & the trailer brakes work just fine. It's also very easy to install yourself (just plug & play) & you can save about $50 over dealer cost.

I have the whole package , and like abpelch says if you do it yourself you wont see it on the evic.....big deal. Save the installation cost.

I THINK you have more control over the factory brake controller thru your EVIC screen. Not 100% sure, never used mine but I noticed scrolling through the EVIC options there was a lot of settings for the trailer brake. Someone correct me if I am wrong.
