It is too soon to judge the MPG with this diesel. Although most evidence points to it being quite the gains. My 2012 does about 13.5 mpg city and 19 - 20 hwy. 17 mpg hwy in the mountains.
Gas (87) is about $5.45 / gallon here. Diesel about the same.

It is important to compare apples to apples. My truck is a crew, 4X4 Laramie and if I can gain 5 - 8 miles per gallon with this diesel I'll be trading up.

If I had a regular cab 2wd short box with the V6 and 8spd trans, maybe not worth it.

All this talk about modifying the new diesel to higher power levels, so much for lowering your fuel bill! At least here in the US. I'll keep the sweet sound of my HEMI and the 20 mpg on the highway.

Just an FYI, most modded Diesels get 10-15% better milage than stock. So if Ram rates it at the lower end, 25mpg, modded you will be looking at close to 29 mpg.

And still passing emissions? I agree that if you remove the after treatment you will pick up some economy but I seriously doubt you are gonna legally increase the fuel mileage significantly on this new engine by increasing the power level.

I have a 2014 Ram Big Horn hemi/8 speed and 3.92 gears...... amazing for power and I'm getting 8-9 liters per/100 km at 65 mph........amazing truck......the diesel will dog off the line IMO. The diesel is new and may have some growing pains....buy a hemi and see how the diesel pans out

Please explain how a truck with 420 ft/lbs would be a "dog off the line".

Not just that, but 420 ftlbs from just off of idle. If there is anything a diesel's excel at it is low end torque. My only close comparison is the way a Touareg TDI drives, while the v8 gasser is technically faster 0-60 the low-end thrust from the TDI makes the Deisel feel faster, even more so when you are cruising down the highway and need some midrange punch. I do not doubt a modded Hemi will out run a modded Diesel, however I think the Deisel will "feel" stronger in all but an all out, foot to the floor drag race. The Hemi needs to rev, not so with the oil burner.

I have a 2013 Hemi with the 8speed and 3.92 gears. It is a strong running truck. If I were buying a 2014, I would get the same thing I now have. You may get a bunch of power out of that little diesel when you mod it but kiss your warranty goodbye.
