I have never once in all the vehicles I have owned had shifter linkage go bad. I have had other things go bad for myself or others which required SHIFTING the car into neutral and pushing onto the side of the road or having it pulled by a tow truck. Very easy process. Seems to me the process got a little more difficult. I work on cars and monkey rigging a temporary fix on some linkage so you can get home is a lot easier than fixing and electrical problem of any sort. More reliable, yeah right!

Sounds like, bottom line, floor-mounted shift lever versus column shift lever versus rotary shift knob is a matter of personal preference.

The 6-speed trans is standard on the ST models only for 2014 (not available on other models), and the floor shifter is packaged with bucket seats, only with the 6-speed trans.

The 8-speed does not use the existing column- or floor-mounted shift levers, because (as noted) it is fully electronic - there is NO mechanical shifter cable connected to it (the existing shift levers are for a mechanical cable). So any kind of switch (rotary knob, pushbuttons, touch screen, or shift lever that was merely electronic) can work with the 8-speed. But before you start wishing for a console-mounted shift lever for your 8-speed truck, take a test drive in a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, or a 2012-2014 Dodge Charger or Chrysler 300, with the 8-speed trans. They all have a console-mounted shift lever that is, well, less than optimal (to put it mildly, in my personal opinion).

So far, ive driven one 1500 on a 1/2 hour test drive, and mine for another about as long on Wed...I pick it up and bring it home tomorrow. I "got used to" the so-called "shifter" location immediately...except for a couple times i found myself reaching for something that wasnt there...the console on the other hand, is HUGE with buckets...im sure i can find SOMETHING to do with my right hand besides rest it on a stalk........as i previously opined, most of the time folks with automatic anythings arent "shifting" at all...its just an affectation..and the truck does have the capability of being taken thru the shift points manually. Having said that, getting used to the smoothness of the shifting was somewhat disconcerting...for all practical purposes, i felt nothing...I I belong to the generation that was taught that a bang or lurch into gear was actually BETTER than a smooth shift...never could understand that, but it doesnt matter....I think ill love the thang....hell, I better.....

As long as they still require you to stick the key in the console, the rotary knob might as well be right next to it, your hand is already there.

Mine won't require me to stick the key in the console... I won't even remove it from my pocket.

This should have become standard technology over a decade ago.
