Hey Giants glad you posted this I was gonna throw a post up in regards to a similar topic as your pondering just cause I haven't in a few. I have a 2012 5.7 hemi 1500 crew. I just had to do some work at the home that required the use of a bobcat skid steer. I rented it locally & w/ the trailer they supplied & the cat on top it was weighing in around 75-7800lbs. It's alot of weight & the hemi pulled it no problem w/no strain at all. Here's where a 2500 diesel or bigger would've been better for stuff like this. I live on a hill in a hill filled neighborhood. I went to back the cat into the driveway as to keep it away from any young idiots out looking for a joyride on a tractor! In doing so backing w/ that weight against the tongue brake engaging this 1500 even as a crew cab was a little light in the ass so I had to engage the 4low & even then she was struggling to get traction, no power issue but traction. I feel w/ more truck it would've been an easier go trying to back her up & in. When driving down the road due to the soft luxury ride this truck provides & the shorter wheel base vs. say a 2500 crew or bigger w/ it's stiffer springs the truck tended to porpoise a bit more than I feel a larger truck would've. In short I don't haul heavy often enough to wanna compromise the superior ride of this truck to the other. I can't stand the smell of diesel fumes for whatever reason I don't know. I did haul w/out any add ons to aid the rear suspension like air bags N such. Those probably would've helped. I burn gas in this piggy but only cause I love hearing them horses sing! At $4.50 a gallon where I live for diesel I don't use her enough to make the money per gallon worth it. I will say I am a little pissed that these 1500 series are only 5 lugs & most all competitors are 6 or 8. I had an old chevy 3/4 ton w/ 8 lugs & back then the rim choices were slim to none. Now 8 lugs & diesel performance products are falling off the shelves. It's a judgment call pal. If you don't mind riding on a roller skate & planning on hauling a lot especially heavier than 7500lbs while huffing diesel fumes & going deaf from the marbling those diesels create then thats the way to go. I'd go ram mega cab w/ a turbo diesel in a heartbeat but I can't get over how nice the 1500 rides moves & sounds. I'll settle for only being able to pull out stumps & not move mountains. Good luck pal either way.
