I was always afraid to tow to much with this after replacing the torque converter at 40k then having the 2nd gear band strut fall out at 100. Is there a heavier duty trans I can go with or just a modified version of what came in it?
The transmission in your truck is actually very well designed just not well built. Have it rebuilt by a good rebuilder. I rebuilt mine, used racing parts and I have towed 32' travel trailer to and from FL and SC, I have towed loaded u-haul trailers from new jersey to florida, I have pulled cars out of ditches, pulled pilings out of the ground, I have mashed my gas pedal down several times...everyday, and even pushed the limits of the truck for long time and it runs fine and it very durable.
Honestly, they are great transmissions when they are slightly modified.
