Default Steering wheel controls not working

I have a 07 2500 sport diesel. My controls in the rotating wheel have systematically stopped working. First the air bag light would come on and go out constantly but irregularly. Then my cruise control would start turning off at any giving time until now it will not turn on at all. Now I just lost my horn and stereo controls on the wheel.
Had the column apart and checked all connectors there and under the dash. All looks good and tight. Im thinking the problem lies between the column and the wheel.
Anybody got suggestions on what could be wrong there and what I should look for? Will I need to take the airbag off?
Thanks

What APSTRAM said. And, yes, to answer your question. The Airbag will have to come off, but they aren't hard to take off at all.
