Default reversing with surge brakes locking up

ive got a boat and trailer with surge breaks and every time I reverse on any kind of slight incline the brakes engage on the trailer. trailer has the 5pin connector and ive got a 5into7 adaptor for hooking up to the truck and when I put it in reverse its suppose to either engage or disengage the brake selinoid so you can revese without the trailer brakes engaging. someone mentioned that the fuse on the truck might be no good but when I looked at the fuse panel and the diagram it shows that there are either 2 or 3 fuses for trailers? don't know which one to look for and check. all lights work on truck and trailer but the trailer brakes keep me from backing up . can someone point me in the right direction.
thanks

Surge brakes are not the same as the electric brakes the surge functions with the weight of the trailer pushing on the master cylinder of the surge brakes when stopping, when you back up an incline the weight of the trailer does the same thing and engages the brakes. There is usually a pin you can install that defeats the brakes mechanically and allows you to back up an incline.

It should be the center pin of the 7way connector on the truck. The center pin is for backup lights or the solenoid for the surge brakes if the trailer is equipped with solenoid release.

For years i pulled trailers with Surge Brakes

if you don't have a place to put a pin in to keep the surge part of the braking system from moving toward the ball hitch
you have a few choices,
drill a couple holes through the trailer hitch, so that you can put a pin through & stop the movement while backing up
or cut a 2x4 down to shove in that sliding piece when you need to back up
or do what we did
we found a piece of angle iron, cut it to about 6" long, welded a short piece of light chain to the angle iron & some part on the trailer near the sliding part

When you are ready to back up, insert the blocking device of your choice, & back up the incline

the nice part of using the angle iron, when you pull forward, the angle iron will vibrate out & hang on the chain

simple but effective

Don
trailer has the solenoid to deactivate the brakes when the reverse lights come on and ive also got the pin to insert into the coupler to stop it from compressing the master cylinder on the trailer. read somewhere that there is a fuse in the truck that might have to be replaced so that when the reverse lights come on it activates the solenoid so the trailer brakes don't engage. I wanted to check the fuses first before I contact the trailer mfg incase the solenoid is defective

thanks for the help guys

No fuse that I'm aware of. It is the same circuit as your backup lights on the truck, so if your backup lights work so should your trailer.

Put your truck in reverse and see if you are getting voltage at the solenoid. If you ARE then the solenoid is bad, if you are NOT, then its time to start working backwards starting with your adapter, then the bumper plug itself, etc etc.
