Interesting replies with good info. Thanks guys! Guess we are better off with the old school twist off-on cap.

I hate the no cap system.

Purchased a 2012 Taurus for my daughter and the first time I filled it I thought someone had stolen my cap.

I'm no dinasor and I don't mind change for the better, but this is one change I don't like one bit. Some things should remain untouched.

Give me the twist on/off any day.

Where did you hear it was mandated?

I haven't seen any mandates for it. One of the large complaints on user surveys was no good way to handle the cap/lost cap/gas ruining paint when you let the cap dangle, etc, etc, etc.

Solution to all of those was...remove the cap.

These a lil tang that sticks out on the back of the filler door to hang the cap by the chintzy plastic connector...who does that?? not me...mebbe i should if i remember....all i know is that changes to vehicles are driven by how many millions they can cut from the cost of producing em...every few cents turns into megabux....thats not cynical, thats reality...

Yup. But sometimes the government steps in and says you have to do X. Other times, its "everyone else is doing it so we gotta do it" or there is enough data in the surveys that cause a product to change. The cap system at this point is nearly as old as the automobile is. It can't get any cheaper. Switching to a different system incurs (quite a bit of) cost.

And you are right. Sometimes, if a small change can save a money per vehicle, that can cause a change as well.

Daimler did that to the point of causing the vehicles to be almost unsellable. Lessons learned.

Anybody know if you can get a ss or chrome locking gas cap lid from Mopar? And, if so, what the part no. and cost is? Thanks.

I am sure that the no cap vehicles save the manufacturer money. The manufacturers are the ones that lobby for these laws so they can profit. Tire pressure monintors are a good example. Think of it 4 monitors plus at least one receiver they can gouge us for.

I used to work in the specialty automotive conversion industry. The odds of the manufacturers wanting more federal regulations (which includes things like TPMS) is slim. The fact of the matter is that it increases costs for the manufacturer which increases costs for the consumer. Eventually costs get so high that sales decline. It's one thing to add options that the consumer can opt out of. It's something else to have to pass along additional costs for items that are regulated. The auto manufacturers are not making anything off of adding TPMS.

I'd much rather have the NO cap system. I was disappointed that the Ram wasn't equipped with it. It pisses me off every time I hang the cap on the door and it falls down banging and sliding in around on the side of my truck.
