Default 95 Dodge 2500 5.9l magnum oil leak

Hey guys, this is my first post. Well, I bought a truck from a family friend for $2600 two months ago. It's a nice truck, hardly any top body rust, only 98000 miles etc. It's a 1995 reg cab long bed 2500 with the 5.9l magnum and such. The previous owner had a new headgasket put on, plenum gasket, intake manifold gasket, studs, thermostat, and heads put on the truck. Now, I must say I'm a complete idiot when it comes to mechanics and such. Well, anyways I just noticed an oil leak. There's oil dripping and pooled up where it seems the block meets the top of the motor.(Like I said I'm an idiot and know nothing with this stuff.) It's leaking on the drivers side rear corner of motor above the starter I do believe and directly above the transaxle and drips down onto the transaxle (I think that's what its called.) Also the front of the transmission is covered in motor oil. There is no coolant in my oil and no oil in my coolant, it don't bubble, the oil isn't being lost hardly at all, I check it everyday, no loss in coolant, and the truck never overheats. It also holds a good oil pressure and I never smell burnt oil and it never smokes. It also doesn't have any water on the dipstick or excess water in the exhausts. So my question is, whats causing the leak? I was told it could be the rear main seal or the left valve cover gasket? Does that sound right? Is this serious? Will it damage the truck? Oh and if I take it to a shop how much will it cost to be fixed? Thanks. I attached one picture of the leak and one picture of the oil on the transmission.

Well the pictures aren't as good as an actual inspection. However I think you may need a new rear main seal and I would have that done anyways just because of the age of the vehicle. Mileage means little, matter of fact we all know that a vehicle that spends more time sitting than driving is going to have more seal failures.

The valve gasket is most probable too! Just replace the rear main seal and the valve cover gaskets and see what that does for you.

That leak above the block could be from the intake manifold, sometimes the manifold doesn't seal properly between the blocks and head, especially if someone doesn't use the RTV sealant in the corners of the manifold/heads.

I am starting to have a leak on the top end myself and it is all related the the heads, but with 145,000 miles and a vehicle that had sat for many years without ever being started it is expected. I myself have replaced almost every seal except for head gaskets and intake manifold gasket.

I vote the rear intake manifold gasket seal. My front one didn't set right when I did my intake manifold gaskets and it started leaking oil after about 2 weeks.

But the pictures aren't that great so it's hard to say for sure. Just something to look at.

Looks like rear main, is your oil pressure fluctuating, going down at higher rpms?

The oil pressure dont do that, and today it started to heat up after25 mintues of use. It got up to halfway between 200 mark and the redline drivin. at speeds between 25-60. But iw was also 103 with heat index so that mightve been the cause. What could cause it to ride warm like that?

Loss of coolant. I would guess the intake manifold gasket(s) have failed. Check your coolant make sure it is clean and the proper level. I believe the rear intake manifold gasket is bad on my 5.9 as well. If you can pull the front cover off of the trans you will have to remove the starter but if you are pooling oil from a rear main seal then there is your problem if not you just have to chase it down. It could be a few other things as well, like a bad o-ring on the distributor, bad oil pressure sending unit, or if all else bad head gasket(s).

Well guys I did some inspecting today and i noticed it's wet on the passenger side in the exact same spot and the top of the transmission has oil on it in the front. Whats causing that? Oh and it wanted to run warm again today..

Heres the passenger side leak, its in the same area as the drivers side one. The oil goes on top of the tranny and follows the side, then drips from the bottom front part of tranny. Any ideas yet? Oh and shop costs for the possible seals?

Once again as stated before. It is the intake manifold gasket or the oil pressure sending unit. If the oil pressure gauge is holding steady then it could only be the intake manifold gasket. The gasket set is fairly cheap but labor will run you a couple of hours at least. A decent mechanic could have it done in 3-4 tops

I would also look at the intake gasket leaking...If you don't add a little rtv to the corners, or make sure the end seals don't move when installing the intake, they can leak...You may also want to look at the distributer gasket, and oil pressure sending unit... The warm weather could have an effect on the engine running warmer...also, if the leak is bad enough, you may have a vacum leak, which could cause the engine to pull more fuel, which will make it run warmer....
