Default HEMI Rig, thoughts please?

I'm preparing a sealed bid for an 05 5.7 black with lift, mud tires but it has been wrecked in the rear and the bed destroyed. I've given thought for some time if I could grab one at a reasonable cost and set it up for a trail rig (street legal) that would be interesting.

Here are my thoughts:
1. It's going to have a rebuilt title (at best, salvage at worst).
2. A bed will run $1000 and paint $400.
3. A fabricated CM flat bed will run $2,500 (with lights top of bar & rear).
4. Fabricate a spare tire mount at an angle below the rear window.
5. Load rated Reese hitch installed (if street legal).
6. Tie down points.
7. If at some point it's sold on the open market would someone buy it?
8. Forget it, don't bid on it.
9. Bid on it, put the replacement bed on it and paint it.

Thoughts from all would be appreciated. R...

What lift is on it? What tires/size? Whats the gear ratio and is it a LSD already?

Those are probably three of the most important things for a trail rig and could cost you a lot of extra $$ to upgrade.

Could definitely be a sweet truck for some mud but I don't know if the IFS is most desirable for difficult trails.

I don't know what's involved in a solid axle swap but that'd definitely be a project I'd enjoy watching! I've seen lots of the full size chevy guys do it with some impressive results.

I assume when you say trail rig it wont be doubling as a daily driver too?

I think you should bid on it, but no more than $2500. With all extra work you want to do to it, it's just not worth bidding any more than that.

I agree with both of you, I have to at least equal + 10% for the scrappers, 100k eng. & tranny and the fall back is buy the bed and paint it. I've been looking at flat bed kits, Flat bed truck options, off road pick ups, flat bed trucks YouTube. Then there's the other stuff like fuel tank, supports, cross members etc...But I have all winter to contemplate and collaborate.

Sanity checks from you guys are necessary. After all the fall back position is buy the bed, paint & install. Any thoughts would be much appreciated (even if you tell me I'm out there). R...

slight lift, 20" tires, 3.55 and Limited slip don't know

As for daily driver, no. But would prefer to be able to drive legally to our knobs (2 miles) where most of our 4 wheeling occurs. I should know much more by the 17th though. I will not be doing any solid axle swaps though. My old 98 magnum has been my off road rig as long as I've been at it. R...

Sounds like a good truck to me as long as the chassis is not tweeked. I'd bid on it if all that is involved is body work.

Agree. We get a chance to inspect the vehicle before the auction. It is a run/drive verification, the frame has to be checked. R...

if the frame checks out and you want the truck it's not that difficult to build your own flat bed if you got a welder and the skill. or at least feel like giving it a try. i have built a few on different trucks over the years it's pretty simple once you figure out the mounts.
