Default My Daughter's '93 Mustang

So I've had my daughter's car outside this summer (She's 7) I uncovered it and washed it.

Went to start it and it wouldn't start. Did a KOEO (Key off engine off) scan with my old scanner, wiggle test, etc...

Dead fuel pump. Go out and buy a new fuel pump. Drop the tank...eeew. Order a new tank etc...

Put new grommets in, new pump, sending unit...undercoat the body above the tank, and put some new fuel in it.

Cranks, won't start.

This goes on for about an hour and I get somewhat discouraged and walk away.

Bright and early this morning try it...cranks, won't start. Get some clear fuel line, route it to the TB, turn the key on, jump the solenoid, fires up but runs like doo doo. Take away the clear auxiliary fuel line and try it on its own. Cranks, no start. Fuel line and fuel again. Runs like doo doo.

Scan it again and everything is working. Pull the plugs (2.3 has 8 plugs) the driver's side is a pita. They all look fine. Clean 'em put 'em back in.

Cranks, no start.

Check the grounds, fuel injectors, rail, and just about every electrical connection imaginable. Clean 'em all, dielectric grease. Coils, fuel injectors, modules, body control module, tank wiring.

Cranks, no start.

Back to the fuel line in the TB. Fires but runs like doo doo. I live in a wooded area and I smell something like it's on fire...leaves, whatever. I take a break and go check it out. Nothing.

Back to the car, fuel line...check. Fuel, check. Crank it and it runs a couple seconds. Smell the fire again...go check it out again. Nothing.

Back to the car. Clear fuel line to the throttle body filled with fuel. Key on, and I jump the solenoid again. Fires with the auxiliary fuel line again, so I let 'er rip. All the fuel in the line and open the throttle body.

The motor is shaking and runs like crap.

All of a sudden it revs up, smooths out, and there's smoke comin out the back like it's a diesel spoolin-up. Let off the throttle body and it's purrin like a kitten.

I go around the back and discover some insulation, acorns, leaves and sticks smokin' under the tail pipe.

So I invested around 6 hours in exterminating and evicting a chipmunk that had made a happy home in the exhaust, and learned that I should cap the tailpipe whenever I put the car outside.

And, I'd suggest that everyone do it.

HAHA! Great story. That stuff will make you turn gray early. Here's one: I work at a marina. Most all boats with outdrives have them removed, serviced and stored for the winter. Rags go into the gimble housing to prevent bird (or chipmunk!) nests from causing problems in the spring. One particular out-driven boat we service developed an over-heating problem when launched. We tried everything. Manifolds, risers, heat-exchanger, belt driven pump, you name it. Still over-heated! So we haul the boat and remove the outdrive with the intention of force-feeding water directly into the water pick-up. It wouldn't take the water! After further inspection, we found that there was a mud-dobbers nest about 3" into the pick-up! Needless to say, we now block off all of them, too!

Wow, guess I would have been getting aggravated too but mine would have been slightly different, try it, no crank, grab beer, try again lol! Around here, vehicles that sit around outside for a while, the mice like to eat the wiring or make homes in the air box lol. Glad you finally found it though!

My son has A 92 LX with a 5.0. I have a small fortune tide up in that car. I have a 69 Mach with a 428 Q code. I see you are in NJ. You ever take in local shows? Merchantville, Pennsauken etc.

I'm appalled at the thought that you'd think I wasn't entirely serious from the beginning. But she does have a Jeep Wrangler. Have you ever seen those plastic garden tools for tots? T have them mounted to the hood, shovel, and two other things a rake I think and a hoe. Also put real lights on the roll bar. That would have been a much easier fix as all I have to do is make sure there are no spiders on it, and the spare battery is charged.

I think of it as an investment. It was in darn near perfect condition when she was born so I decided to put it in storage, maintain, and upgrade it. The way I see it, right now it's 20 years old and when she's old enough to drive it it'll be near 40 and she'll know it inside and out. (Not to mention I won't have to buy her a new car)

I'd have to ask her. Last time she saw me working on it (Oil, flush and fill antifreeze etc...) I got yelled at..."That's MY CAR...you 'sposed to ask daddy"! I did find a nice set of front black tweed seats but I;m having trouble locating the rear for a hatch-back LX.
