Default 26 foot camping trailer

I am going to be ordering a 2014 1500 ecodiesel and want to get a camping trailer. I know there are a lot of factors, but would I be able to pull a 26 footer? What gear ration should I get? 3.55 is standard with the ecodiesel or I could move it to a 3.91.

What's the weight of the trailer that you're looking at?

I'd definitely recommend the 3.92's if you're going to be doing a fair amount of towing; the truck will handle it that much better. You'll probably need them to get the tow rating for a 26 foot trailer as well.

The short answer is probably, but depends. Not all trailers of a given length are created equal. The weight can vary significantly, so you need to know the weight (GVWR of the trailer). The long answer is, you may be putting the cart before the horse. You should figure out what size trailer you need/want first, then buy the truck to tow it based on the GVWR of the trailer you plan to purchase. When looking at trailers pay attention to the GVWR of the prospective trailers and give little creedence to dry weight. Otherwise if you buy the truck first you will necessarily limit the trailer you purchase to what your truck can tow. As for the truck, in any case if you are ordering, considering your plans to tow, I would consider ordering with the lower gear ratio available.

Dodge has a great specs page on their site, work through it and choose all your truck options and it will tell you the tow rating for the truck.

Keep in mind that the 4,451 "unloaded weight" of your trailer is not what the trailer will weigh - as built or travel-ready. This is the weight before any extras are added on - such as an oven or an awning. With my trailer (Rockwood 2304 - also a Forest River product), there is an almost 900 lb difference between the unloaded and as-built weight. When you put in water & all your camping stuff you should expect to be close to 6,000 lbs imo. That's the weight the truck will be pulling - which it can do with either a 3.55 or 3.92 rear, tho as others have said the 3.92 will make a marked difference. The other consideration you need to really look at is the hitch weight - showing at 402 lbs. This will go up a bit with the extras you add and the camping stuff stored. With this hitch weight & trailer weight, a 1500 can do the job - likely with either rear end. But it's the total payload you need to keep an eye on & the hitch weight is part of that - not the trailer weight. And for towing any trailer - be cautious of your hook up. A weight-distribution & anti-sway hitch is highly recommended for safety & better handling. Personally, I've used an Equalizer brand for nearly 10 years & can't speak highly enough about its performance.

I have towed a 26 footer with my Ram several time.. Keystone Bullet with a single slide. But it all comes down to the trailer and features on it too. That is a pretty light floor plan and very popular for many RV companies. Highly reconmend weight distribution and sway. I have never have hauled with one seeing as if the trailer looks to heavy for my truck I will just grab the work f350 (Work for my dads RV dealership).. But it can easily be seen how much of a difference they make with ride quality just from the hooking up alone.

The eco-diesel should haul it fine, I have done with 3:55 gears in my truck, but would reconmend you get the 3:92 because down the road they will pay for themselves. Also maybe rear air bags aswell?.. I know the rear coil suspension tend to sink alot more then leafs when towing and with airbags and weight distribution you would have a nice tow set-up.

Thanks a lot for that info Charlie! I am going to get the anti sway and weight distribution hookup. I've taken liking to a 21 foot flagstaff micro lite trailer. Also I am leaning toward the 3.92. From what I've read, the 3.55 will work but the 3.92 will basically work better. I really appreciate the input!

Brandon, I am going to go with those safety feature for sure and I think I will get the 3.92. People have said the 3.55 will work but the consensus is the 3.92 will be better. Thanks for your help!
