Default painting sport rims question

Im thinking about painting my sport rims black and was wondering if anybody has had a shop do a gloss black finish on the stock sport rims? anyone have any pics what this would look like? is it even possible for a shop to do this? is powdercoating my only option.

I used Plasti-dip, cost $60.00 and you can remove it later if you want.

I think if I wanted to change the color of the wheels I would have them powder coated. The wheels take a pretty good beating with all of the road grim and rocks. I don't know how well a paint job on the wheels would hold up. Especially if you live in areas where salt is used on the roads in the winter.

They may not be available for the sport wheels but when someone pointed out you could buy the chrome cladding on eBay for under one hundred bucks I thought maybe that would be another approach without permanently altering the wheels.

I plan to follow the plasti-dip route myself in the shorter term

I like it. And love the colour of your truck. Pretty rare!

I put the truck up on 4 jack stands, took off all four wheels, no need to mask
tire it will peel off real easy. I did 5 coats per rim, being that they are 20" it was
one can per wheel.
Sorry they are a bit dirty, been raining a lot lately and haven't had time to wash
them. I've had them done for about 3 months now and holding up great so far. I
have been waiting for my new tires since I bought the truck (goodyear A/T
adventure 275/65/20) but I should have them this week. We shall see if they
can get on the new tires without hurting the plasti-dip. The shop seems to think
they can do it lol but if not the dip will peel right off and I will redo them.
Funny thing, when I went in to the dealers parts department when I came out to
my truck there were a bunch of sales dudes around my car and one asked "Did you
buy those rims from here or online?" I when I said they came with the truck they
looked really confused lol

Looks great! have a few questions, I too have a 13 sport with same wheels and would love to do this, but do I need to sand or scuff the wheels up before I apply the plasti-dip? or do I just clean wheels then spray on? How long do I wait between coats? Should I change my mind in 3 months can I just peel plasti-dip off then have the wheel look same as it did?

Sorry about all stupid questions I just have never worked with plasti-dip, this is all new to me.

Thanks!

Thanks for the close up picture. I was thinking about doing this with my wheels when I take them off for the winter. After seeing yours I will be giving it a shot. Already did the RAM emblems so this shouldnt be any harder, given that they will be sitting on the floor of my garage. Did you do the backside of the wheel as well or is that just brake dust/road dirt ?

Do not sand or scuff, just a good cleaning with maybe some de-greaser, let dry, and spray

10-15 mins between coats and I would do at least 5 coats.

Yes. More coats will aid in easier removal.

see attacked pic, yes I sprayed the inside of the rim that can be seen (indicated by green arrow), it's kind of dirty in this pic
I did not however spray the back side you can't see (indicated by red arrow)

do a google search on plasti-dip and check out youtube, there are dozens of great videos explaining how to spray any part of your vehicle and how easy it removes. dipyourcar.com is a great place to look as well.

I checked in to this and one of the major powder coater companies in Calgary, does not recommend nor warranty powder coating over chrome as there are adhesion issues
I think painting over chrome has the same issue
