Kudos.
This cannot be overstated enough. Seems pretty obvious, until you see all the knuckle heads, trusting their life and/or safety to jacks. I passed a neighbor underneath his car wrenching on it, with only a hydraulic floor jack for support. The car was moving and bouncing around as he was trying to free a seized bolt. I politely suggested he use a couple jack stands, even offered to lend him mine. His reply was jack stands were not needed, because he has a top quality 4-ton floor jack. The following week he was under his car again, this time he blocked it up, using 4- 4x4" pieces of wood. What a disaster waiting to happen, some people are too stupid to live.

Natural selection... I have been putting my vehicles on stands and then keeping the floor jack under a good spot raised up just enough to make contact. I have three kids that I don't want to lose their dad for doing something stupid like having a vehicle fall on him.

I wasn't too smart about it yesterday. I had the scissor jack supporting the front and the floor jack supporting the back with a floor jack stand under the axle just in case the floor jack slipped. When I realized that it was going to take a lot more effort than just pulling the tires off, I decided to call it quits.

I had to raise my jack stands up a little higher than I liked, so I didn't want to rely solely on them. I've never had a truck quite this tall, so it looks like I'll need to get some better stands.

Not so funny story of the day: when I was 16, I came out after school and realized I had a flat on the rear. My truck was parked on an incline so I backed it off the hill which required me to turn the truck. In doing so, I didn't straighten my front tires out (problem #1). Problem #2: we had about 5-6 teenagers out there with nothing better to do providing advice. The worst part about this was that I had one of those old, really tall ratchet jacks they used to use for tractors and stuff. I have used it before so it wasn't a problem getting the rear end off the ground and the tire off.

BUT, for whatever reason, I couldn't get the jack to ratchet down. It wouldn't engage. So, we sat around for a minute while some people went to look for some WD-40, and while we were waiting, a buddy of mine found the release switch. He walks up and flips the switch and the truck comes plummeting down. Unfortunately, the front wheels were turned which caused the rear-end to pivot and apply pressure and torque to the jack. This caused the jack to shoot out from underneath the truck and land about 15 ft away. That is essentially a 50 pound steel rod being thrown 15 ft away. We were really lucky nobody was hurt or killed and that we didn't send a steel rod through the side of somebody's car.

Lesson learned! Don't let others mess with your stuff in a situation like than, AND experience is invaluable.
