Gwilburn, that is a great explanation and more or less my understanding. So if the engine was designed to work its best with 89 then it may results in less performance or possibly fuel mileage with 87. I have also noticed in fine print on some fuel ratings it says "with 100% gasoline "

And the owners manual specifically does not recommend anything higher than 89.

Drove to work this morning, 26 miles one way, and was at 19.4 when I turned off the engine. Drove home and was at 18.4, Traffic SUCKED! Took me twice as long to get home as it did to get to work. Basically our trucks don't like stop and go. They like cruising at speed. Stop and Go = bad MPG. I know, this isn't news.

MPGs are hovering right around 16.3 with 1600 miles on the truck. My 2012 would show 14.4 on the evic with the same driving pattern. Pretty happy so far and think it might get better as the truck continues to break in.

Default Is that pure gas or not?

I think a little more relavent information within the octane rating might be to include whether or not the fuel is 10% ethonal blend or seasonal for that matter. It is a mathematical certainty that 89 octane gasoline that is 100% gasoline has higher explosive energy than 89 octane gas that is 90% gasoline and 10% ethonal. I see about a 7-10% loss in combined driving fuel economy when running 10% ethonal blend. For that reason I often run 91 octane...only because it is NOT blended with ethonal, but not because I need additional knock protection.

From the US DoE:

Gasonline (base) 100.00%
Gasoline (conventional, summer) 100.40%
Gasoline (conventional, winter) 98.72%
Gasoline (reformulated gasoline, ethonal) 98.14%
Gasoline (10% MTBE) 98.04%
Methanol fuel (M100) 49.75%
Ethanol fuel (E100) 66.67%
Ethanol (E85) 71.94%
