One clarification. 518's were non-lockup til around '92, at which time they went lockup and were re-designated 46RH.

Good info to know, I was not aware. The late 80's 904 derivatives had lock-up converters (found this out the hard way), I assumed the 518 would have as well.

The A500 was a lockup unit from day one (1989 model year), but Mopar held out a while on the 518. They had a habit of phasing in upgrades or changes. It wasn't all bad. Those early Mopar-specific lockup units weren't very durable and those wanting the overdrive were happy to grab the 518 and slap a B&M Holeshot converter on it. Man, things sure have changed. When I was a kid you were Hot Snot if you had a Holeshot converter. Nowadays, you never even hear about them.

If I remember right, I think the B&M was the hot ticket for Mopar 727's for a while.

It was. I had one in my 727 in my '69 Charger. It was perfect. It wasn't til around '71 when the V8's got the part throttle kickdown, so mine would only kick down at full throttle. In traffic I could be eyeing a place to jump to, pull the floor shifter down to 1st, but it'd stay in second or even third depending on the speed. Soon as the gap opened up, stand on the gas and it'd go screaming off in first at near redline, then I'd snick the shifter to second at get a firm slap in the back. The part throttle kickdown is convenient, but I like and miss it the full throttle only. Tweaking the kickdown with what the kit did, it'd upshift at full throttle right on 5,800rpm. At max effort I'd manually shift at 6,000rpm. I loved driving to and from school (lived in the country, lotsa twisties). Was constantly rowing the shifter back and forth. That kit made it possible.
