Exclamation In the market for a Cummins.. whats the best for me? HELP!!!

im looking to buy a another truck soon. I had a single cab short bed 03 ram 1500 auto tranny with a 5.7l jasper engine. i liked the power it had i just feel like i needed more truck. so now im looking to get a 4 door short bed truck. id like a 2006 to a 2013. I like that style so thats why im choosing those years. im very new to the diesel world to say the least. I know a bit but not enough to really know what i want. im the type to tune and mod every vehicle i own. so i guess ill get down to it, whats best. 5.9l or the 6.7l??? i like manual trans best but then im not sure if i should get the truck with an auto. which years can i run straight pipe exhausts with out screwing up the truck? im lost. input would be great guys!

06-07.5 5.9 trucks don't have DPF's in the exhaust and don't require expensive tuners or simulators to delete the emissions.

07.5-12 trucks have all the emissions like DPF and EGR. They have the 6 speed automatic.

Both engines can run a straight pipe exhaust.

The 13+ trucks do not have a way to delete the emissions or tune yet.

Personally, I think Dodge automatics are garbage, so I would go with a manual unless the transmission was rebuilt, or you find an automatic cheap enough.

This is great info summed up for you ^^ I wouldn't necessarily stay away from automatics though. Sure they aren't the best built trannys but if you drive them right and don't put more power into them they'll be okay.

Keep in mind you're looking at two different generations of Rams though. IMO the 4th gens are WAY nicer than the 3rd gens. Especially the interiors. You really need to look closely at all of that with your budget in mind to see what you want to go with.

I have had 2 6.7L CTD with the 68RFE trans and had no problems out of them. First had a 10" lift and 37" tires. Current one hauls my 17,000# toyhauler on the regular (at least twice a month). Bolth have had H&S tuning and 5" exhaust. Transmissions have never slipped or even acted funny. The Question I would ask is do you really NEED a cummins?

i believe i do, I have a car trailor and i find myself hauling cars trucks and heavy machines so im thinking i do. my hemi i had just wasnt cutting it. i had to be at high rpm constantly to up small hills because i live in pa and there isnt really and flat running roads i use. but im leaning toward a manual now. but i think i like the interior style of the 07.5 to 12 and the exterior look better. you guys have been a huge help!

I have had an 02 second gen cummins and currently have an 05 3rd gen cummins, If I was looking for another I would look for a 6.7, I have not owned one but they have better pistons than the 04.5-07 5.9 had that were more prone to failure. I have driven a number of 6.7 auto rigs and they have a ton of power compared to my 05 with a smarty Jr.
I would look for which ever body style you prefer be it a 3rd or 4th gen with a 6.7 and all the deletes done already.
I would not be afraid of an auto at all. I have logged many miles of abusive heavy towing with a lot of Dodges and have yet to have a failure, but on my 02 I did replace the stock converter and VB with BD diesel units as I was at 560 hp and 988 tq and power pulled it, sold it with 150K on it and had been at that power level for 100K miles with no issues.

The 5.9 pistons aren't prone to failure. It's the fact that the commonrail injectors can stick open and melt a piston.

The 5.9 Commonrail used the same injectors as the LB7 Duramax and the LB7's had injector problems as well, but more common.

Yes, the newer commonrail trucks (04.5+) have more injection events for emissions. But, there is a difference between saying the pistons are prone to failure stock, then saying they are a common failure point with larger injectors. There are tons of people running larger injectors with stock pistons on the 04.5+ trucks. My buddy with an 07 that made 690 HP on a stock bottom end. I still say that injectors sticking open are the leading cause of melting a piston on the common rail trucks. That, too much timing, or excessively high EGT's for a long period of time.

I agree with you, fuel filtration is important.

Yeah for the most part, but when people compare 100K miles on 04.5 and newer they have been through 3+ times more injections than injectors at 100K miles on say a 24v where there is only one injection event.

So an injector on even an 03-04 has 2 times as many injection events as earlier injectors and the 04.5 and newer have even more injection events, it is un realistic for people to think a CR injector is supposed to last as long as a 12 or 24v cummins.

This is where added filtration and 2 stroke oil come into play to try to get a few more miles from them over what they would get in stock form.
