Mine is also smooth all the way down.
We don't use our tailgate all that often but I like knowing it won't fall on my kids' heads if they want to help me by lowering the tailgate if I have my hands full.
If my broke I would buy another (dealer has'em) in a heartbeat.

My first though is this, I have one and for me the entire 9 turn thing is crap Tighten the nutsert and the ball will be more rigid and less likely to bend from and under tightend nutsert.
Place a dab of grease or lube of some sort in the socket before popping it on the ball. The dry ball joint will back out your ball from the nutsert.
I would have rther used a Nut and washer like the attempted one.

Mine exploded on me the other day too! I was going to hockey and put my bag in the bed. Lifted the tail gate up and thought, that was easy? Usually I feel some of the resistance from the shock.

Got to hockey and "THUD", and it became apparent what had just happened lol....

The bottom ball mount stripped out of the nutsert (I presume it had backed its self out slowly over time and eventually popped out. It was a little bent.

Weird, i thought this was just my luck.

I just noticed today that my lower ball mount looks like it is starting to bend.... guess I'll be calling Dee Zee customer service tomorrow.

What do they need for warranty info? I doubt I've kept a receipt for a $30 after market part

Last time when my top clip broke I just called customer service and they took care of me. They are really good about taking care of their customers. Mine came on my truck already installed by the dealer so I didn't have a receipt.

LOVE my DeeZee tailgate assist strut. I took 1954 M37's advice and got the stainless steel ball stud. WAY beefier than the OEM ball stud.

Stainless, so it won't rust like the DeeZee ball, and with a larger and stronger stud to secure with a nut and washer from inside the tailgate. Just remove the access panel, and it's not hard to put the washer and nut (I used a stainless nylock nut and stainless washer on the inside) on, and never have to worry about the nut zert coming loose.
