Default How to wax

Hi all,

So a couple weeks ago I washed my truck and had planned to wax it. No waxing experience so I thought it was wash, wax, and good to go. Boy was I wrong. The wax dried up and didn't want to come off I ran my scrub brush over the wax and now my driver side looks bad in the sun. Can anyone give any detail on how to properly wax a truck? I searched on here but didn't find any how-tos.

Sean

^^^^ Ed speaks the truth. I just finished a complete polish and wax using tips from Primo. The results speak for themselves, check out my thread. http://www.ramforumz.com/showthread.php?t=157359

The trick with wax is to put it on thin and buff it off as soon as it hazes. The panels should also be at room temp.

Thanks for the info Rans. I'll check into getting that wax. I used turtle wax and hardened up on the rear fender by the time I got to the front fender. So apparently it hazes and dries quick.

Hi Sean;

wax on wax off. easy peasy. don't get too far ahead of yourself. stick to one panel at a time, and remember thin is in. make sure you do a light coat. once it begins to haze up, gently break away the haze with a gentle wipe. let haze again, then buff off to a great shine. then move to your next panel. cut large panels in half or quarters. for example, i would do the hood in four sections.

also, id look to a different over the counter option than turtle wax in my opinion. some love the Turtle wax, but i don't. you could have probably bought meguiar's or Duragloss at the same store you picked put he turtle wax.

Hi Jeff, thanks for the input. What's the deal with waxing then polishing? Or is waxing good enough?

polishing is to clean the paint and amp up the gloss. polishing is done before wax.

Wax is the protectant, or last step product (LSP) to be applied. it will provide your paint with protection, not really clean the paint and polish it, unless you are using an All in One (AIO) which polishes and protects in one step.

check out this thread it might help you out.

Hey Primo,

Thanks for the info as it was quite detailed. While looking over the clay method a few days ago, your method talks about a bar and lube. I assume put the lube on the vehicle then use the bar over that area...correct?

anytime!

yes the lube goes on the vehicle AND lube your clay. work clean and always knead your clay to make sure you're working with a clean piece!

some guys actually clay with soap too. kind of like a clay and wash, but i do each step separately and precisely...im kinda crazy that way.

if you're using a clay towel...then rinse very well after every panel, but the same concept really.

heres a couple of generic but helpful videos to help...
