Default trailer wiring

I am assuming that I have a factory tow package on my truck. I have the plug under dash for a trailer brake controller. Are there any other ways to tell? I looked and can't see any other plugs under bed bihind bumper. Looks like a damn mess under there. Factory plugs may have been there but been cut out. Does anybody know where i can find a tow package wiring diagram? I need to install a 7-way trailer plug for my camper. Just from a quick glance looks like wires might all be there but would like some kind of help.

Thanks.

Your truck may have had the factory trailer tow package, but that did not come with a wiring connector in that year. There should be a wire harness under the rear of the truck near the center of the bumper with 7 wires of the following colors/characteristics -

Red/Orange - +12V Battery (Thick Wire) From fuse #8 (40A)
Black/Orange - Tail Markers (Thick Wire)
Light Blue - Trailer Brakes (Thick Wire)
Violet/Black - Backup Lights (Thin Wire)
Dark Green/Red - Left Stop/Turn - (Thin Wire)
Brown/Red - Right Stop/Turn - (Thin Wire)
Black - Ground - (Thick Wire)

Under the dash, the brake controller wiring should be -

Red/Orange - +12V Battery (Thick Wire) From fuse #8 (40A)
Black/Orange - Ground - (Thick Wire)
Light Blue - Trailer Brakes (Thick Wire)
White/Tan - Brake Light sense - (Thin Wire)

Hope this helps.

Thank you. I am pretty sure all the wires are there, just not going to the connector. Previous owner must have had to remove it for something, if it was even there like you said. Guess I will have some wiring to do.

Thanks

Chances are it never had a trailer connector. They were an aftermarket item in 99. Dodge only supplied the wiring in the truck to accommodate adding the connector without butching the trucks wires. It was around 2002 that they started installing a connector at the factory.

Good luck with your wiring, and just holler if you need any help.

Brad12kx - thanks for the wiring key in this thread. I had the same question for my '97 3500 standard cab chassis truck. I found the 7-wires tucked in the left rear frame rail to add the bumper connector to but needed the wiring key as each of the wires was simply terminated with heat shrink tubing from the factory. I'll research www.etrailer.com and www.suspensionconnection.com for the appropriate 4-wire plug in brake controller. Todd
