Default To buy or not?

I am in the market for a cheap vehicle, it would be nice to get a truck since I need something to haul while working on the house. I found a 1999 Ram 2WD for $1000 sign says blown engine but runs/drives.... Im calling the guy tomorrow since he wasnt in today for more details (9am Wednesday)

I am hoping blown gaskets or something but if the motor is shot I can get a chevy 350 SB and a 350TH trans to throw in.... What do you all think?
The truck is in excellent shape, no rust, clean inside and out, I just dont know about the motor issues yet, But $1000 seems a deal if its an easy fix, what would you offer? Id like to walk with it for $500

MIKE take a mechanic of some sort with you
an extra $100 would be worth it, especially if the truck is a real piece of crap & you would not want it

you can recover from a $100 cost if the truck would cost you $1000 just to repair, after the initial cost

if the truck really is in good shape, and i do mean way better than average, i would drop an engine in it. when you consider the price of a new truck it really is an easy choice.

Ok Iot some details and some answers for above.

The truck is a 2wd, 318ci
The guy said its a great truck no other issues (except cracked dash) he said his brother in law borrowed it and it overheated, so he thinks it just gaskets as it still runs and drives just rough running, no knocks.

Im not familiar with the 318 as I had a 360 4x4, my cousin had a 318 in his 4x4 but his truck was sluggish as hell ( guess being a 318?)

The reason I say a chevy 350sb with a 350TH trans on the 2wd is I know chevy ( I can tear down and rebuild in a day blindfolded with my hands tied behind my back, cheap and dependable to build as well.

Now I dont mind keeping the 318 and replace gaskets if thats all it needs since the guy is negotiable. I am looking around for a replacement motor on craigslist if there is one cheap enough, do I need the ECM or anything to swap out the motors?

With a chevy, I will go straight carberated as Im not messing with all the electronic BS a motor and trans, wire to starter and charging, done. and yes an electric choke...lol

I am opened to ideas... but I am leaning to buy this.

Hate to say it but it fell in my price range, I landed a 2000 Chevy Silverado 1500 for $900. Need to replace tie rods and windshield, only things that didn't pass inspections. It did belong to an elder man who had a stroke at the wheel and smashed it, front drivers and passenger bedside. I found a fender and ordered the lights which are fixed, the bed I may just build a custom flatbed?Stakeside? I will take it to a body shop for $200 and have the front straightened ( core support shifted ) otherwise in excellent shape, starts right up, no smoke, whole thing is dry as a bone... no leaks. So far the truck is tuned with a K&N CIA, straight pipes but its not loud? oddly enough but it stands up and scoots when you get on it and sounds mean as hell.

Nothing wrong with a Chevy either, with a 327 or 350 engine or even a 5.0L 302 they hold up well for what you need right now
my '99 302 engine was good for everything i needed, i got rid of it because the transmission needed work

This truck has the 4.8 in it (small V8 ) but damn it has power! More than I really need but its a vehicle. Insurance runs me less than $40 a month so Im happy.
