Default Surging Engine on startup...WTF?

I have a 2002 Ram 1500 with a 4.7L engine. I've been trying tackle this issue I've been having when I start my truck. No matter if it's hot or cold. The engine surges at a super high RPM and then will idle high and erratic. I can tap on the gas to get the RPM to come down a little, but it still has a bad idle and is sitting at a higher then normal RPM. I've been looking for vacuum leaks but haven't found anything. Does anyone know what the hell is going on here?

That sounds like it could be the throttle body positioning sensor. Sometime carbon deposits can build up inside the throttle body and cause that condition.

I agree it definitely sounds like a sensor. There are a few sensors that help control Idle but I think that would be the first one due to the age of the truck. Pull off your throttle body and clean it as well.

That would be my first step. Easy, cheap, and straight forward.

check the TPS, followed by the IAC and then the MAF. one of those, if not a vaccuum leak is most likely your issue.

So what happened with this one? Im with whoever said the TPS or a vacuum line. Anyone ever removed the air line on the fuel pressure regulator? it causes the exact same symptoms.
