Exclamation Please be carefule on the roads for the holidays

I just want to take this quick minute and tell everyone to please be careful on the roads this holiday season.

We had some freezing rain this morning and almost witnessed a semi truck slam into the back of an ambulance and hit the ditch.... Here's what happened...

Driving to Drayton Valley this morning. Coming up to Century road as I was traveling west on Yellowhead, saw an ambulance on the overpass. I watched to see where it was going, and it came down to head west. I was in the slow lane and the ambulance was already on his way to the accident, just up the road. I move into the fast lane as there was a car exiting the off ramp. Anyways I stay in the left lane as I could see the accident scene was just ahead. The car in front of me moves in front of me as we start to slow down.

I put on my hazards as I could see the ambulance had stop in the right lane. From what I could see, there was 1 or 2 vehicles in the ditch on the right side on their side or roof and around 3 vehicles on that side of the road and a couple on my side. As we are getting closer to the accident and slowing down, I am watching my passenger side mirror.... I could this semi truck coming up quite fast. As we get closer, he isn't slowing down or moving over as the lane he was in was blocked. As his cab got to my front window I hit the horn a couple times to clue the idiot in that he needs to stop and get over. Well he ends up hitting his brakes, basically locking them up. As his truck is coming to a stop I could hear his tires locking up and then I watched as his trailers (it was a Gibbsons Super-B) starting jack-knifing towards the ditch.

I was shaking for about 5 minutes after this as I continued down the road. If the road would have been a bit more slick then what it was, He would have slammed into the back of the ambulance, hit the ditch and killed at least 1-2 people. I still can't understand what was going thru his head when he wasn't slowing down or moving over..... It's funny too because about 20 KM down the road the semi ended up passing me!

A while later, I heard on the radio that they ended up shutting the highway down for an hour or two to get the accident cleaned up.

Yikes! Glad nobody got hurt (or killed) there. Great reminder to slow down, and adjust your driving style to the conditions at hand.

There's different driving styles? Man, I wish they had them here. The only driving style I've been able to identify is take your foot off the accelerator and stare out your sun-roof like Stevie Wonder.

Either that, or take your foot off the accelerator and fidgit with something in your lap.

In any event, It IS a good idea to be extra careful around any holiday with the increased traffic and volume on the roadways. And for CHRISTmas sake, don't use any hand held devices, or text while driving.

This has been a public service announcement by WIII

...don't get me started on the whole "defensive driving" thing. Yeah, teach that to make people better drivers. They even have classes for this stuff.

Really...DEFENSIVE DRIVING?!?

Is that why other drivers seem to be trying to stop me from reaching my destination? C'mon just think about it...defensive driving...ponder it a second...what does defense mean...

Let me help visualize that:

American foot ball. The Defensive Lineman is usually one of the biggest guys on the field...take this one for example:

See how he defended his territory?

I thought defensive driving involved a LAWS rocket and/or a roof mounted 30mm cannon

Agreed with being careful on the road during the holidays. Yes the weather is definitely a factor and should be regardless of what time of year it is, but during the holidays especially, aside from the increase in traffic volume, the other danger is people being in places they're not familiar with and having absolutely no idea where they're gong, holding up traffic looking for street signs, missing turns etc. I know it is aggravating and I see it every year so if you happen to be spending your holidays in the area of your home, just be a bit more mindful of out of town visitors. Texting is one thing but trying to get directions while on the phone or playing with the GPS on top of the many other distractions is also an accident waiting to happen and I want to see all of you and your ride back here after the holidays safe and sound!
