Default VHT 3rd brake light - (For the picture lover in you)

Hey everyone ,

Got my hands on a can of VHT tint spray and decided to do my 3rd brake light. Thanks to Bones for the idea and push to use this stuff. It works great, is super cheap and is easy to do. I scuffed the lens with an SOS pad (as Bones directed) and lightly with steal wool and then sprayed on the VHT. I had to order it through Parts Source for $15 here in Ontario, Canada. Noone seems to carry it or want to order it. The only other places I would have been able to get it here was Napa and a Performance car parts place in St.Catherines called Automotive Warehouse.... they said they had 200 cans in stock haha. $15 is alot cheaper than the $110 I was going to spend ordering one off the internet

Just remember to whip off the lens after you have scuffed it and make sure it is warm when your spraying it. Heat up your garage or wait for a nice warm day. I sprayed on one coat, let it dry (1 hr) then sprayed on another coat. Nice and even swipes across the lens at about a foot away. I installed it and am very surprised how much light it lets out for how black it looks. Anyways here are your pictures

Unscrew the 2 philips (star) screws

Pry, pull the lens out with your hands (no tools should be needed...get the screwdriver away!)

Twist the bulb assemblies and pull them out of the lens

IF your bulbs need replacing pull the bulbs straight outwards from the sockets and push new bulbs straight into the sockets

After the 1st coat

2nd coat installed...Brakes on!

Brakes off!

Yes we have snow in Niagara now

Thanks Bones...rep-u-ta-tion.

Actually TomBlue its funny you mentioned the bulbs. When I had the lens off I stuck one foot in the truck and hit the brakes.... they both didnt work

I went into my bag of bulbs and dug out two replacements. So after that I figured I could go as dark as I wanted with the VHT cause other drivers never saw my 3rd brake light before anyways lol.

(Ive been having burnt out and non-functioning bulb issues lately haha, there all sorted out now though)

Thanks for the comments!!

That looks pretty good! I used Niteshades on the taillights of my Dodge Neon and they turned out really good. You just need to remember that normally you won't need more than two coats unless you're not concerned about light getting through. This stuff goes on pretty dark so you need to be careful. A lot of people will wet sand after they spray and layer on a couple coats of clear. I think it's personal preference but it may last a bit longer. Mine turned out just as nice without the clear, I think.

All in all, yours look pretty good! Nice job!

^^^ haha good one. Well I'm really looking to dark out all taillights so I think I'll be visiting my local Parts source or napa since I'm in Oakville, Ont. So you just use an SOS pad and lightly scuff with steel wool? Sounds easy enough.

You dont see any scratches? Or I guess you do it very lightly

Hey guys thanks alot for the positive feedback. Didnt u know its legal to spray your license plate black in Canada ??

Anyways as for an answer to you Scatpak... yes... just use an SOS pad or even one of the thin square pan scrubbers you would use doing dishes... except dont use it on ur dishes after lol.

You should beable to just srub the lens with it and get a light, dust worked up on the lens. Wipe that light dust off with a soft towel or rag and you should be good to go. You might see very faint scratches but they cover up. I wouldnt go hardcore with steel wool or anything but I think u get the point.

I put one coat on and then let it sit to dry and put another on. Make sure the first coat is dry and its warm in your garage or else you might get orange peal.

Bones thanks again for the recommendation on the VHT. It is a great, cheap DIY that saves money.

Im not going to do my tails as I bought the aftermarket ones but wouldve considered doing the stockers but like my new ANZO's

Anyways everyone who is considered this should atleast give it a go and see how they make out.... it is cool stuff !
