Question Transmission problems!!!

I have a 1997 ram 1500 that the trans went out so I went and bought one at a junkyard. Same trans just different plugs and I tried to swap plugs but it will not fire. I need to know what I can do that is cheap and that I can do myself. I dont know what to do anymore so I'm on here. My truck has the 8 wire plug and the trans requires a 3 wire plug. Can anyone tell me what to do????

Ha. You're pretty screwed. You took the transmission out of a truck that is from before OBD2 standard (1995 and earlier). You have to get a transmission from a 1996 or higher. The one you took out is a hydraulic governor. Yours is electronic. You pulled a 46RH when you need a 46RE.

It's one of those situations where you can't just swap connectors, change valve bodies, or get an adapter. You have to have the electronic model.

Speaking of the 46RH...

Would that work on my 1983 D-150 with a 318? I currently have an A727 3-speed Auto in there. I know there might need to be additional wiring in there since I don't have and overdrive switch on mine....but still. Would it work?

Oh hect yea it would work. The bolt pattern is identical. I was going to tell you about the OD not being able to function without additional wiring, but you covered that.

So, to clarify...

The bolt patterns of both the bell housing and flywheel match whether the engine is a LA style or Magnum style engine?

I know I'm asking the same Q again, but I don't know all the differences between the LA and Magnum engines...

Yup, the bolt pattern between a Magnum and LA of the same displacement are the same.
The 318 is internally balanced and the 360 is externally balanced. Now the bolt pattern of the magnum 360 is the same is the 318, thus why you can find a 46RH/RE on both the 360 and 318. However, you cannot take the torque converter or flywheel from one displacement and throw it onto the other.

So...if I did it...it would be best to find a 46RH that came off of a 318. If I bought a reman...then I would have to get it with 318 specs, including (like you said) purchasing the flywheel and torque converter. Correct?

Transmission-wise you're safe. If you pulled a 46RE/H from say a 360 you could just install it onto a 318 and that is fine. But you cannot take the flywheel and torque converter off of the 360 and put it onto the 318. It wouldn't make sense to do that anyways because you can just use the flywheel and converter from the 318.

The the balance of the engine is independent of the transmission. Just don't use the flywheel and converter from whatever vehicle you are taking the donor transmission from.

Ah ha! Got it!

2 more questions:

1. Is the 46RH a "better" transmission than the A727? Are there any inherent "issues" with the 46RHs? The reason I ask is...I had an old Mopar guy call me "crazy" for even thinking about the swap. He said the early OD trannys had "issues" with towing and that I should under no circumstances even consider the swap. So...is he right, or is HE the crazy one?

2. How about an outright purchase of a tranny. Know of any places that make good transmissions?

I've heard of Hawk TorqueFlight Specialties and Monster Transmission. I don't know anyone that has purchased a tranny from either place. Reviews, feedback, is there anywhere else I should look?
