Question Cold Air Intakes. Worth it or not?

I'm looking around and see a wide range of prices for cold air intakes. My question is this: Are they worth the money invested or would a better OEM style filter do just as well?

I found this one and the price is not bad. Has anyone seen or used this setup? Did it help with performance at all?

It all depends what your looking to do.. Some say they will add 15 HP to your truck. I will tell you right now you wont make anywhere near that with just a cold air intake by itself.

if you want an inexpensive way to see is by trying the Durango mod....do a search for it, theres a lot of info on it here. Its cheap/free, and easy to do, and looks factory which is important to some people.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm mainly looking to improve performance and efficiency through various upgrades. Not after a hot rod but some more pep would be nice. She has 180K on the clock and I want to keep her running strong for as long as possible.

I'll look up the Durango mod before buying anything. Free is good.

I want to do a jr. cold air mod...adding a full flow panel filter and an inproved flow intake tube! The factory air box is well designed, it just needs to be less restrictive! Problem is, I haven't found any jr. kits yet!

I have a CAI that is basically the same as the link. But mine is by Spectre Performance. Its in my build thread somewhere if you can find that. But Ive noticed a good 1-2 more mpg with it. And noticeable more power. But I mean, its still a little 5.2! haha..

Well, I've searched a couple of times for the Durango Mod. I did find pictures of one that looks like a flat intake cover with a filter on it but it looks too short to be pulling cold air.

Is it just a swap from a stock Durango to a Ram 5.2 with a filter at the end? If so, are there any specific years to look for.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Dave

Cold air intake is definitely worth it a lot of bang for the buck. I saw a 1 mpg increase too. Get a k&n . Spectre is cheaper but the flange that attaches to the throttle body breaks over time. Then I would do the exhaust . With those two mods u can really wake your truck up and save money on fuel . It's a win win. In six months time the mods pay for themselves.

I have the Magnaflow Cat-back set up on now. I need to get the intake to flow as free as the exhaust now. I'll try finding more on the Durango thing but if no luck I’ll go with the one in my first post.

I had the Spectre on my old truck. The flange was fine in the year I had it. Didn't break at all, stayed tight, etc. using it like a truck. It was a good intake.

That being said, I would not buy an intake or exhaust expecting gains in fuel economy. Mine actually went down a little during normal driving. Intakes and exhausts are more supporting mods. On my old GMC I put an intake on it and noticed no change in mpg either.

I just don't want you to buy into the hype with everybody claiming gains in fuel economy.
