Default 97 Ram knocking noise from rear

I have a 97 ram 1500 4x4. I just recently have been getting a loud knocking noise from the rear gear housing. I put it up on a lift a my shop and found that the drive shaft where it goes into the rear or the pinion has play and is making the noise. I was just wondering if anyone else had this problem or if anyone knows what has to be done. I checked my u joint nad it is not that, it is deff. internal. Any help greatly appreciated.

The pinon yoke has up and down movement? If so, the pinion bearing is shot.

Yea I would say the pinion bearing as well. How long has it be making the noise? I only ask because its possible the other components may be damaged as well. Pop open the cover and take a look

It has been making the noise since this past friday. Can you just replace the pinion bearing or is it a whole rear??? I looked it all up and if I have to do the rear im going to upgrade to 4.88's for my 35's upgrading to 38's. After all that Im looking at around 600 for the parts and I would do it myself!! What do you think??

If you don't know how to set up a rear , I wouldn't advise it . Leave it for a professional .
