Default 4X4 rear axle

My son has a 1997 Dodge 1500 4X4 with 9.25 axle, 3.90 ratio & sure trac. Pinion bearing is on its way out. Is it fairly easy to replace the pinion bearings without rebuilding the whole axle? Is there another axle that can be adapted in place of the 9.25? He is on a limited budget & the only used axles I've found are half way across the country & are a grand plus shipping.

I read this several times, hoping some one else would answer you. Any 1st and second Gen 1/2 ton axle can be swapped in, you could even upgrade to dana 60's... just depends on how much you want to spend, and the amount of time you are willing to spend.

You can replace the pinion bearing with out pulling the axle out from under the truck... however you may have to remove the back cover to help align every thing back up, and make sure every thing is where its supposed to be when you torque the pinion nut back down.

If this were mine, I would just go a head and get a new pinion bearing and seal and install it, but then again, I am very comfortable with my abilities at wrenching.

The whole axle has to come apart to do the pinion bearings since the pinion has to come out.
How much you need or want to rebuild at the time is up to you.
If its a daily driver, its probably not the best thing to learn on if you've never done it before. IMO

The whole axle does not have to come out, we hardly ever drop axles out of the rig unless there is clearance issues such as you would find in a lowrider, you have to pull the back plate, but every thing will slide out of the way. We just did my 2001 a few months a go. But I don't recommend doing it yourself if you have never set up a differential before. Get you something with a removable third member to learn on, and send this one to the shop. its a 4 hour job by the book, so should be roughly 300 bucks for labor at most ($80X4 hours). We charge $60/hour, but some shops charge up to 80/hour.
