Default 5.2 to 5.9 swap possible or make sense in a 2000 1500

Okay, so I'm picking up a 2000 Ram 1500 with a bad 5.2 in it. The truck has 93000 on it but it's got a smoked crank/rod bearing. My question Is, will a 5.9 bolt and plug into this truck and is it even worth the effort? From what I've seen, there's about a 25hp difference but I'm thinking with a cam, exhaust and some other bolt on upgrades I'll be 25hp ahead of the 5.2. I need something that's going to be a quick easy swap and bolt in, so a Hemi is out. Just figuring if I have to change the engine anyway and I plan on doing a cam upgrade, why not start with the additional 25hp. I don't know what the limits are to the 5.9 or if it's even a better engine, so Any help or input is appreciated. Thanks guys!

The 5.9 is the largest of the LA/Magnum family of engines. So, yes, it's essentially a straight swap. There are a couple considerations. Every few years, the connectors for the sensors changed, so if you're doing a whole engine, keep that in mind. The whole top-end (intake, TB, heads) are the same. Distributor and exhaust too. The Magnum make-over allowed Chrysler to standardize more parts between the two engines. If you're doing anything with the intake off, take the opportunity to replace the intake manifold plenum gasket. The 5.9, by virtue of greater displacement and despite having a milder cam than the 5.2, is ahead modestly in HP, but it's torque that's the goal, and it's even higher there, even un-modified. If you have a manual transmission, you may need to have the pilot bushing placed in the crank. For an automatic just bolt it up. One of the easiest engine swaps there is. Get the computer re-flashed for the bigger engine.

For a truck, you are looking at the wrong figures. TORQUE, not horsepower, is what you want. The 5.9 gives 45ft/lbs more of torque. Torque is the stuff that gets things done. Now, since you mentioned a cam (and of course a new intake since you have to take it off anyway), a gain of ANOTHER 50 ft/lbs would be REAL easy to achieve. That is the "put your ass in the seat" power that you really feel. That, and a good computer tune, should make you very happy for very low$.
