There are just a few screws to remove it. What happens is the IAC [idle air control] opens and closes to establish the proper idle. Carbon and other deposits build up and make it sticky, so the valve [acts just like a plunger] doesn't operate as smooth as it could. So clean the plunger on the IAC with chemicals that do not eat away the o-rings or other parts of the assembly and do a good job cleaning the port where the IAC resides. A LOT of buildup occurs in there too.

If you did it already, how did it go?

It is attached to the throttle body and it looks like this. Just unbolt it and pull it out.

oh okay sounds easy enough. as for the throttle body cables on the left, do those just slide of or is there a special way to get em off? I see where it unbolts but I noticed in another thread a guy broke one of the clips on the cable off and I was just checking to make sure theres no special way to take em off

They are just C-clip style where you slide them forward before you take them off.

Hey RamTech..newbie here. So is this Procedure OK for the 2003 Ram 4.7? I have no idea if mine is electronic throttle controled or not... I am having this whole problem of truck dies at low idle. Would this be the best place to start on the problem?
Thanks
RJ

The easiest way to tell if it's electronic throttle controlled is to look at the throttle body. If it's got cables going to it it's cable controlled. If the throttle body is electronically controlled (some call it "drive by wire") it's electronically controlled. If it's got an APP (Accelerator Position Pedal) it sends an electronic signal to the throttle body to correspond with the pedal's movement.

Kind of like an old steam ship. Captain moves the handle and it sends a signal down to the engine room. Engine room workers make it happen. Man I guess this isn't new technology after all.

If it is electronic do not move the butterfly manually.

Cool

do you think this could be my problem.. i just cleaned the tank, replaced the fuel pump, strainer, and the fuel filter... it's been doing really good until today, we went up a really steep hill and it pretty much lost all power... ater that it starting acting crazy... i you press the pedal to the floor, it backfires and stalls, unless you are sitting at idle, it does ine sitting at ile.. but chokes out when you stop... you really can't get it above 35-40 because no matter how hard you try to ind a happy medium with the pedal it will not happen...

Removed my TB and cleaned it this pass weekend. VERY simple and there was a lot of buildup. But now it looks almost brand new.
