For example if the vehicle has a 1700lb payload and we add 400lbs of equipment we have to install a new sticker that now reads a gross payload of 1300lbs. We have upfitted trucks with a CC that were only left with about 600lbs of payload left once all the equipment was installed.

IMO if the door sticker on your new truck shows 1700lbs it's a reflection of the equipment that is installed on your truck. More options = less payload.
as a licenced heavy duty mechanic in canada i have to agree with ya but dot is never gonna check a personal vehicle. people run overloaded all the time especially those with campers in there boxes. that dosent mean they should tho. very few people think about this kind of thing.
