I had been looking into the kindle myself, but like Michael, I have an extra room devoted to my book collection, haha, but one of those would help keep my truck from becoming an extension of my library, magazines in the doors and books on the seat. My dad got a kindle for Christmas and he seems happy with it. Apparently, you can only have one book on there at a time? Downside for me, if I read a book I really like, I have to own a copy. Upside, a lot more portable when I travel, 'course, guess you can't have it on a plane anymore but good luck with your choice.

There's another alternative to the Kindle or other brands that you don't have to buy any hardware for. It's Kindle for PC, free software that you download to your computer and just read the books from there. One less electronic toy to keep up with. (on edit: seeing CajunDodge's post above you can download as many books as your computer has space for with the PC version.)

If you're not familiar with it take a look here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.htm...cId=1000426311

I received the international Kindle for Christmas from family. I travel for work 12 months a year and have been waiting for the Apple tablet. I loaded/bought about a dozen books on to it so far. Even found some free books on the kindle/amazon site. Had my doubts about it at first but reading is actually pretty normal, turns pages quickly. Have read one book so far and got used to it after the first few pages.
Hope this helps.

They were talking about the new Apple book reader on CNN this morning. They were saying it's going to sell for between $500 - $1000 bucks. Supposedly they are going to make an announcement at the CES convention soon.

That is a bit out of my budget! Yikes!

Only problem with the PC version of a Kindle is that I can't be on the Z!!

Sooooooooooooo..........................

this thread prompted me to try the Kindle for PC software being it was free. And although i absolutely hate to admit amazon put out a good peice of software..........they did.

Just finished my first book using this software and it was a very pleasant read. I have to take my laptop with me everywhere anyway so it just made sense to try it out.

And it saved me an additional $300.......gotta love that
(didn't really save me anything cuz i bought a new headunit for the ram)

Yes but I don't want to read books on it!! My Crackberry is for keeping in touch with friends, family and the Z!

I have been watching the news on the Nook. Software has been upgraded so the glitches are gone and the unit has a SD expansion slot for up to a 16GB card. The Kindle doesn't allow for expansion which is a drawback for me. Going to keep watching, I know there are some new readers on the horizon. But for right now I am leaning towards a Nook.

Here's some more freebies if you get into old books. They'll work on Kindle for PC's and most of the stand alone devices.

Project Gutenberg:
http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page

ManyBooks:
http://manybooks.net/

The books these sites make available are all beyond their copyright span but their libraries include classics and even books banned in their time.
