Default Vehicle VIN Track Down

So here it is.
I came up with a great idea for a birthday surprise for my old man. When He was young he owned both a 1973 Ford Mach1 with the 351 Cleveland, and a 1979 Z28 Camaro. These cars were his pride and joy and he talks about them all of the time. (both probably in ruins now a days)
So I wondered how awesome it would be if I could track one of them down and see the possibility of buying it for a rebuild (assuming neither of them hasn't been scrapped of course)
How could I get a hold of the VIN number, or my fathers vehicle history? I don't believe he has any license plate numbers or anything like that.
I thought maybe I could go to the DMV with his info and see what they could bring up.

If your father is like me he may have old paperwork sitting around, insurance cards, vehicle loan papers, etc. Get your mother to help as I am sure he may not like you snooping in old paperwork and you would like to surprise him.

What is the possibility that he still uses the same bank, again with your mother's help they may still have the information on file, same with his insurance file. With everything being digitized these days the keeping of those files takes up very little storage space and they may have made archive copies.

The other thing to do is try to find a "like" vehicle, if you know the engine, specs, etc you can usually track down a like vehicle for sale.

He actually doesn't have any paper work on either of them that my mother knows about. He had these cars back in the 70's and late 80's, The Mach1, I could probably get one that is the same as what he had, but the Z28 was a limited edition, different than most others of it's year. He had to sell it when I was born. But maybe if I could find another limited edition.
I might have to go to the DMV, or like you said, the bank. I'll have to find out if he had the same one.
