Default Everybody sticking with 5w-20 oil?

Just wondering if it makes sense to go with 5w-30 instead for the Pentastar engine. Also let me know if you are using synthetic or not.

I'll be pulling a trailer a lot so 5w-30 sounds good to me. I guess my intervals will be "severe service".

Is the 6 cyl Pentastar engine spec'd for either 5w20 or 5w30?
Thicker oil does not necessarily provide better engine protection or wear. Much more complicated than that.
If spec'd for 5w20, stick with it. Your engine will not be in any better condition (measurable) after 100,000 miles using a 30wt oil. If either are allowed, use whichever you want. You and your truck will be fine with either.

It's spec'ed for 5w-20.

Then use 5w20, or 0w20 if you are in a super cold climate.
Viscosity is only one of the ways a boundary layer is formed to prevent engine wear. Chrysler engineering designed an engine that can be used throught the operating range safely with a 20wt oil. I would recommend a name brand, upper end oil, that meets the Chrysler oil spec.
All 3 of the Pennzoil 5w20 oils meet that spec. Synthetic or conventional - that would take me paragraphs to discuss. Either is fine in most applications.

Always stick with the mfgr. specs. Heavier oil doesn't mean better protection.

Thanks guys. Thought I read lots of people questioning 5w-20 somewhere, but it must have been somewhere else!

I don't have MDS that I am aware of.

5w-20 oil, full synthetic not blended and a good cartridge filter is all you need. Change @ 5,000-10,000 miles or when the EVIC tells you.

I change my oil every 6 months because I purchased the life time warranty and want Chrysler to have no questions on maintenance. I only drive 5,000 miles a year, light hauling/trailer and this is over kill.

Penastar engines don't have MDS. They run on all 6 cylinders all the time.
