If you look at ecomodders.com, there is a lot of discussion about aerodynamics. It turns out the problem is that the truck is the same size at the back, tonneau or not, and the size of the back end causes most of the problem. Much of their work on vehicles boils down to adding tapered rear ends to their cars and trucks, to get that suction effect reduced. For example, http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13533 I don't know if I repeated it accurately but if you want to look at aero stuff, that's a good place to look. There's a guy over there getting 57mpg on his daily commute with his 07 Dodge Ram 2500... http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26259

The pic from Allpar... pretty cool BUT doesnt tell the whole story.

I JUST did put a tonneau (sp) cover on my ride so havent done mpg comparison. I know it keeps the turbulence in the bed down, I know it slips through cleaner now than before. Being a vinyl type I clearly see the air bouncing on it at highway speeds.

Leave an empty can in your bed and watch it react. Obviously there is turbulence created.

Interesting topic.

This question depends a lot on where you plan on driving. You will see a noticeable difference in MPG at highway speeds for sure. This is simply due to the aerodynamic advantage that a tonneau cover provides. However, city driving is not going to be affected, other than the stuff in the box of your truck will stay dry when it rains.

My experience was that I got somewhere between 1 and 2 MPG better on the highway with the tonneau cover on than without.

Hope this helps.

Have a Bed cover on my truck for little while now and zero change in mpgs, Highway or city.

I don't know if anyone has noticed that on a 4th Gen Ram, the truck is narrower at the tail lights than it is closer to the cab area
so they are trying to give us better mileage

The trouble with the smoke show in the aero tunnel, it all depends on where the hose is held

this video shows the air flow in a pickup bed at the tailgate
the turbulence is shown with the trucks tailgate in different positions

So what about camper shells then? They completely change the aerodynamics similar to that of an SUV. So what would be the benefit/drawback of that?

camper shells are heavier and you would lose mpg instead of getting better mpg.

Just my 2 cents here. I have to drive from OKC to SC about twice a year. The first couple trips the MPG was almost exactly the same. With in .2 MPG over 2800 miles round trip. After the cover got added I made another trip and my total MPG increased about 1.5 MPG. For me that was huge. That was about a 10% jump. I will take that all day.
