Post 2013 Dodge Ram 1500 Hemi (MPG)

I just recently traded my 2011 Dodge Ram 1500 V8 Hemi 4x2 for a 2013 with the 6 speed transmission. My 2011 with 48k miles was getting 20-21 mpg on the highway, my 2013 was getting around 17.5-18 mpg until my first oil change last Friday at 7200 miles, 800 miles shy of the factory suggested oil change at 8000 miles. I drove 400 miles yesterday 40% on interstate at 75 mph and 60% on state highways at 63 mph and averaged 20.0 mpg. Can I expect to get better fuel mileage as the engine continues to break-in?

To be honest your numbers from your 2011 and for your current 2013 both sound too good to be true with the 6 speed. I never saw numbers like that in my 2010 hemi sport quad cab. It was 4 wheel drive but still the entire time I had it I did 85% highway driving and only averaged 15.5 mpg. I only drive 5 mph over the posted limits and didn't pound on it either. I have a few friends who had the same trucks and they said they got the same mpg as me

After I traded my 2011 a family member ended up buying it from the Dodge dealership and to this day it consistently gets 20+ on the hwy at 60 (+-) mph. I thought I had made a big mistake because my 2013 didn't get but 17-18 (+-) or so but finally it got 20.0 round trip yesterday. I did notice yesterday that at 60mph it was running about 1700rpm but as I started setting my cruise at 63mph it dropped back to 1500rpm. Hand figuring the mileage yesterday was 20.9 so the computer was pretty accurate.

The 2011 was a 5 speed, my 2013 is the 6 speed and both are 4x2..the only thing Ive done to my 2013 is the K&N air filter, and I only run non-ethanol..I do notice a decrease when I use 87 and 93

I have 1500 miles on my 2WD 6 speed crew cab (5.7) and I noticed a decent gain when I started driving WITHOUT my MDS on - all I have on it is a drop in K&N and a flowmaster. When I drive REALLY gas-conscious, I get roughly 26 highway and 20 city.

There is no difference between the 2011 and 2013 transmissions on their shift patterns. The "6 speed" transmission only allows the user to manually select the 2 prime gear via the buttons on the shifter.

One thing that he brought up that does affect fuel economy is on 2012 and newer trucks with the six speed, the truck will not shift to top gear (5th or 6th) depending on how you want to split hairs, until a certain RPM. So when I am cruising at 60mph in my truck it will not shift into top gear and I cruise at about 1700 rpm. If I bump cruise up to 62 it moves the truck RPM up ever so slightly enough that it will finally shift into top gear and my revs drop 250 RPM down to 1500. If I cruise at 60 I get 18-18.5.....if I cruise at 63 I get 20.5-21.5
