Yeah as its already been stated, if there isn't a gap that will cut the dip, you need to remove the tape immediately after the last coat is applied. You probably have already peeled it off and redone it, but they sell a repair kit that is just basically lacquer thinner. It thins the edge of the ragged dip so you can respray over it.

If you look at some of one of my threads i got a bunch of pics on some stripes i did with plasti dip a while back ago.

The way i did it is, i prepped way more then i should have carefully planning on how the tape will come off. When you peel the tape that decides your edge, you don't want to bring off any other pieces of tape you didn't want to come off at that time.

Here's a trick to any one wanting to leave nice crisp clean edges, AND ALSO letting it dry in between applying 4-5 coats. The trick is to spray with all of your desired coats with drying in between. But on the last coat as soon as you get done spraying it, peel the tape off exactly the way the guy did in that video.

It doesn't make sense at all how it works, but it does. I guess it kinda re-wets/re-activates the plasti dip. It works a lot better then one thick coat method, because most of the time you will get runs and a rough finish with the one thick coat method.

If anyone has anymore questions let me know.

The trick with Plasti-dip is to tape past the crease where you want a straight line. once the Plasti-dip is dry. You will be able to peel the overage of Plasti-dip off. giving a clean edge where the crease is. Just my two cents

I've found that to get clean edges, you have to peel the tape while the plastidip is still wet. Makes it tough to get all of the coats you need. I just don't wait as long in between coats. I lay them down pretty quickly, then peel the tape ASAP. Seems to work pretty good.
Yep, yep. Five coats of anything, letting it dry, then peeling the tape is a no go....it's the same with conventional latex house paint.

Looking to add to this. I recently did my first plasti dip application to "RAM" letters stamped into my new stirrup steps. I didn't see these threads and did 5 coats over several days and went. To remove the tape while dry and I got the same disappointment.

Since then, I've sprayed it once and then thought to read up on it here. Now that I have the one coat down, should I do 3-4 more coats all within an hour and then peel the newspaper masking while wet?

The way I did it, I sprayed 5 coats with 10 minutes in between each and on the last coat immediately peeled the tape. Worked perfectly.
