Default you guys up for a little garage advice?

Right now I pull into my garage, I gotta stop and fold in the drivers side mirror to get into my garage. My antenna hits on the door frame but other than that I'm good. I initially wanted to turn my 2 door garage into one big door which didn't seem too difficult as it doesn't appear to be a main support between the doors.

I also have been thinking about making it a bit taller and I'm wondering if that's even possible.
I snapped some pictures for reference.

From the front of my garage here's the doors

which started my grand plan

From up top it doesn't look like turning it into one big door would be an issue, least not to me, but I'm not a construction kinda guy

Also you can see the floor in there, I'm THINKING that just raising the doors would be more than enough space but I don't know how far I can go.

Up on the doors there's a beam above either door that doesn't seem to have any purpose to me.

So what do you guys think, can I get a door about the height of that ceiling? Even more anybody ever try to raise the ceiling of a garage so there's room to jack a lifted vehicle up?

With the door opener gone from above my truck I think I'd be able to have more than enough room to park anything I wanted in there so it may work out really well with the added clearance of no door mechanism.

I won't hazard a guess about those beams above the garage doors

Above mine there is a 4x10 & they don't put those up unless support is needed
10' in from that, i have a 8x10

I do have an apartment above my garage & the other 3 garages too
4 apartments all together

1 above the garages, 3 on ground level

one big door you would need to header the entire opening

you could gain height by adding a row or two to the bottom of the garage with brick if its not attached to a house ect ...

You can't go much higher... if at all, but you could probably use a laminated (manufacture beam to span the distance) and install a larger door. Looks pretty simple from the pics... Actually, the doors look like 8'x7'. A doubled-up 2"x12"x18'+ should work as well to accommodate a standard 16' garage door.

I would have a local building contractor have a look to see what can be done. If you have any of the original building plans, that would probably be a big help. You may be able to get a copy at a local land registry department. After you get a professional opinion you may be able to do the work yourself.

I figure we're going to need a contractor, but I don't want to even bother if it can't be done.

Looking online it seems like all the standard sizes are 7ft tall. Love to be able to get another foot in height out of that.

I am not sure about your state or local codes, but here in Canada most would require a building permit as you will be altering structure. As it is a header beam up there already you may well requires an engineer's report and solution.

Your structure is A-Frame over the garage, there is a beam spanning across the garage door opening.

I can't hurt to ask a contractor to take a look at it and give you a quote. From what I see I would say theres a 99% chance you can't go any higher, if it's possible you would have to alter the roof line. The only advantage you will gain with a single door is maybe not having to fold the mirrors in but you're going to have to get close to the other vehicle in the garage to do that.....you're going to ding one eventually!
