You are starting to get close to maxing out a 1500 hemi with 3.92 gears. You must not have to much stuff if you are choosing to move yourself so if it was me and my choice I would say a diesel ram is a great choice and would laugh at a load like that. However a solid 2500 with a hemi would do just fine, you won't get the greatest gas mileage compared to the diesel. You have to ask yourself what are you gonna do with a diesel after you finish your move across country. If your Tacoma pulled the trailer ok then a diesel would be happier pulling a loaded trailer and your Tacoma 8). This is just my opinion and I'm sure someone with more experience in this scenario will comment as well. Tito answer your original question about diesels, I definitely would inspect any diesel truck your gonna buy. Diesel trucks are generally used hard, like for heavy towing and hauling. Make sure it drives okay and the transmission is solid and shifts normally. If you see a fifth wheel or gooseneck attachment or aftermarket trailer brake this will usually mean that truck was used for heavy hauling often. There is nothing wrong with heavy hauling however if the truck has around 100,000 miles like you stated then it's very important it was maintained correctly. If the truck was used and maintained well then you should have no problems, if it was used and abused then know you know why they are selling it. Diesels will last you a long time if maintained well however they do get expensive fast if it was not maintained well. Sorry for such a long post, I get a little OCD on a topic I like 8). Hope this helped you out a little
Thanks, this does help, I did notice that there was a rail for a 5th wheel in there and I may have mis quoted the mileage, it only has 86,559 on it. As far as what to do after the move I figure I'd just use for transportation. We may in time get a longer trailer and this is why I am thinking diesel. I thought of the hemi, but I also looked at the amount of fuel that I'd consume on the way up those draws. I've figured approximately 3/4 more than diesel. The weight factor is dry, my stuff I will have moved for me by the ABF trucking co. this way I don't have to deal with it. I did it twice from La. no more for me no sir! So I will continue my search, and hpefully I get blessed with a good vehicle that was properly maintained. Thanks again I appreciate the info.
