Default Crankshaft Front Seal install questions

My truck is a 2002 Dodge Ram 2500 5.9L Diesel.

1. I received a metal ring with the new seal.(Timken) Is that a tool to install the seal? If so, how do you use it? I do not have Special Tool 8281 or it's handle and can't see paying 80$ for a tool so seldom used.

2. I will be removing the gear housing cover. Do I install the seal from the front of the cover or the back of the cover. One reply in one of the forums says "the front" while my Dodge manual says "install the seal into the rear of the cover". If it is from the rear, the tool mentioned in #1 above does not fit around the guide.

3. A mechanic asked me whether my crankshaft had a sleeve. He said if it did the aftermarket seal would not work. Will it be obvious once I get the damper off whether there is a sleeve or not?

4. Do I install the seal with the guide in place? If so, do I then remove the guide from the front after the cover has been installed by just prying it out with say a knife blade?

5. Has anyone done a video of this?
