I believe on the second gen Rams, the HVAC was controlled via vacuum lines. Perhaps you have a small leak.

Could be. With low, to no vacuum, they should revert to defrost. Safety feature.

Dan, The first thing to check is pretty easy. Find the check valve on the vacuum line that is located right at the intake manifold on the passenger side. (It looks like one of those little low-flow water drippers on a garden watering system.)
Remove it and see if you can blow thru it. It should only pass air in one direction.
If it fails, a new one is readily available at car parts stores.

Good luck and let us know how you make out with it.

I am having the same issue except mine is stuck in defrost. I will check this out as well. Mine is also not cooling and the a/c clutch is short cycling. Freon pressure seems to be okay according to the gauge that I have.

Check to see if any of the vac lines are cracked and check to see if the metal lines for the 4x4 actuator is rubbing on something.

If you hear any "hissing" from the hvac panel, you need to tear it apart and re-grease the plastic diaphragm.

I am having a very similar problem. I have noticed when I run my A/C that it will switch to heater while driving. I can hear what sounds like a door moving under the dash when it switches. If I turn of the A/C wait a few seconds and turn back on the A/C will work again.

I have been trying to determine when this happens and I think its when the RPM's drop but not always. I will be checking the check valve and looking for any cracks in any hoses.

Besides checking the hoses in the Engine compartment and the check valve are there any other recommendations. I read something about the blend doors having problems in the 95 - 02 dodges. Heater Treater has a replacement part they say fixes a lot of Heater / A/C issues. Any thoughts on that? Here is the link. http://www.heatertreater.net/magento...ram-95-02.html

Thanks in advance for any help.

I purchased the heater treater part but haven't installed it yet. Gonna replace my cracked dash and while everything's apart going to install heater core and the heater treater part at the same time.
