Default Stuck on defrost

Hi there, is there a "hall of wisdom" list of top 10 things to check for a heater stuck on defrost for a 1997 ram?

Thanks.

That, or a vacuum failure/leak. The "default" position is "defrost" in case of loss of vacuum. Safety feature to keep the windshield clear. Yes, you may freeze and die, but at least you will be able to see the road.

Hmmm...thanks for the response guys. I also notice a faint whiff of that sweet smell coming from the defrost. Maybe a slight "weep" in the heater core? What's the best way to check? Pressure test?

Someone suggested bars-leak to me, but I ran the other way....

Check for dampness in the carpet. Use a radiator pressure tester and look for pressure loss. But it seems that sickly-sweet odor is your best clue.

Thanks...no carpet. I have vinyl floors. No evidence of leakage either. Someone suggested to melt a small hole in the bottom of where the core is to look. It may be evaporating as fast as it's leaking?

If the smell is there, then it is a leak, and it is inside. You are in denial. It is an all-day crap job that pegs the "Suck-O-Meter" at 9.9.
