Default 1998 5.9L 4x4 towing

As stated above I have 1998 Laramie SLT 5.9L w/tow package. I would like to be able to get a little more fuel mileage and better towing performance out of it. I am towing a travel trailer that weighs appox 5k. I am thinking about using a spectre or Volant CAI and edge CTS gas tuner. Is this a good start of do you all have a better idea?

I have seen some pretty stout motors built off 360's, but I suspect they spent quite a bit to get the power. I would think, headers, freer flowing exhaust , a better camshaft and cold air intake. Ported heads and perhaps milling them 30 thousands or so. Every thing helps, then get a good dyno tune. I've gained around 60-65 more rwhp in my hemi by headers, deleted cats, and a pretty hot cam. However, the hot cam required a 3000 rpm stall converter, because it reduced low end torque! I hate to say it, but you might want to drive a new 2014 hemi Ram. If I put all the money I spent modifying towards a new Ram, I'd probably have one!

I have a 1996 RCSB, just towed an S10 600 miles on a u-haul transporter, I have a K&N intake, muffler, and 33" tires (3.55 gears). I pulled from Phoenix, AZ to Needles, CA to Mission Viejo, CA to Imperial Beach, CA with a grand average of 12.4 MPG. For a short stretch (hwy 72/62/40) I averaged 17.1 (55mph zone and dead flat)...

Plenty of power, no complaints other than all the other people on the road...

I hear the SCT tuner is a better bet, and headers are a good idea too. I've had great luck on past trucks.

Pump up your tires to the max, drive steady, and coast whenever you can!

I have a Tuner, CAI, full performance exhaust (headers included), and it didn't help in the towing department yet... next up is getting some steeper gears... I am thinking about 4.10:1 would be better than what ever is in there now...

One thing I just remembered; I put high ratio rocker arms in my Chevy, and it totally flat lined the power curve, made it far better off the bottom. I have yet to do it to my Dodge, but I will soon.

The power output gain was minimal, but the SOP fell was 100% better!
