Default Awesome!

Thanks for the results! This is exactly what I was looking for. I truly think my truck would get just as good or better gas mileage with the 3.92. With overdrive and MDS it's not like the old days with just 3 speed tranny where if you wanted any type of gas mileage you had to go with a higher gear ration, even in the 2.xx range. I noticed when I went 80mph the mpg on the EVIC rose quicker. I would prefer to go 70mpg and have more low end power. Oh well, I appreciate the data!

Ken in Katy.

Good Deal!!!

I haven't tried any 80 mph MPG testing,,, As I drive a LOT for my work, any more 'autograph sessions with the LEO's' would be 'very detrimental' to my career!

As aerodynamic drag inreases eponentially as speed increases, (not linear) I think, at least for the guys with better results at higher speeds, perhaps they have the 3.21 or 3.55 gears and may be just getting the Hemi up into it's most efficient rpm range, or, at a RPM range that doesn't 'lug' the motor.

The Gen 4 Hemi has a rather 'steep' powercurve, Kind of 'peaky' vs flat,,
I found it 'odd' that the 4.7 actually has more torque than the Hemi all the way up to 2600 rpm, and only slightly less HP at the 2,000 RPM mark:

http://www.dodge.com/en/2009/ram_150...ty/powertrain/

My truck (reg cab) is also lighter than most everyone elses here, and the aerodynamics are probably a tad different than, say a Crew Cab,,,

With the 3.92's, my Hemi turns about (don't quote this as absolute fact!) about ~1900~ (?) rpms,,, With this set up, the truck is not 'lacking' for power at that speed,,,

The 'cyclone effect' is interesting,,, but if it means I'll have to drive 80 mph,,, eh, well, 'no thanks'.

Now, as far as the Tonno helping or hurting, I can't absolutely confirm either, but,,, Beaumont trip 1 was without tonno, and all the rest were 'with Tonno'

(Also, please keep in mind the truck had >1,000 miles on it during 'Beaumont 1")

I never paid attention to the power curves on the 4.7 vs. the 5.7 but interesting. With my 3.21 gear I guess that explains why the hemi seems to be more comfortable at above 70 mph. I'm like you, we got Trooper Terry out here on I-10 Katy and he is ruthless on wanting autographs. I'm not really that concerned with gas mileage, I would have kept the toyota, I was just trying to get some numbers with a hemi and 3.92 gears. As long as I stay above 15mpg I'm happy. All your numbers have helped and appreciate it.

You shouldn't need to drive that fast to get that "cyclone effect". There was an episode of Mythbusters where they were testing pickup truck gas mileage, and they showed a pickup in a little wind tunnel to demonstrate what was going on in the bed. I'm not certain what speed they had it going in the wind tunnel, but I'm pretty sure it was slower than 80.

With tonneau covers, I think the size of your bed might dictate how much of an effect it will have on your gas mileage. My friend has an F-250 with an 8 foot bed, and when he had a soft tonneau cover on his truck, he saw a significant improvement in gas mileage (sry, can't remember the exact numbers). I've heard of others with less significant improvements after putting a tonneau cover on their trucks.

I do remember hearing about M-busters finding out that dropping your tailgate didn't help your MPG,,,, I didn't see the actual episode, though,,,

Did they do any testing in regards to tonno's?

I believe bed length does dictate tonno effectiveness,,, I can see where an 8 ft'er would 'scoop' more than a 5 ft'er,,,

(Yeah, I know it's 'tonneau', but 'tonno' is easier for me to type! )

I think the first time they tested the fuel mileage with the tailgate up vs tailgate down, they were using (in Dodge lingo) Crew cab trucks with a short bed. When they revisited it, it looks like they used a standard (short) cab and a longer bed. They did test one of the hard fiberglass tonneau covers when they revisited it, but their result was that tailgate mesh beat tailgate up, tailgate down, and the tonneau cover for efficiency.
They didn't test the different methods on different length beds, but I'm still pretty sure that the length and width of the bed makes a difference.

Thanks for posting that video. It's interesting that they didn't get any great savings with the cover. You'd think that would make the truck more aerodynamic and reduce drag and all that. Maybe the mesh is better because you remove weight from the truck by removing the tailgate.

I have an 09 with 3:92 gear ratio and my MPG's have seemed to steadily go down over the past 4 or 5 months. I get around 16 on the highway and I am lucky to get 270miles out of a tank anymore.
